My name is Brian Robertson, but most people just call me Rob. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) who has experience as an EMDR therapist specializing in treating trauma, dissociative disorders, and borderline personality disorder. I work in all aspects of trauma, big or small. I even work in things that other therapists don’t, such as victims of sex trafficking, military combat trauma, and victims of ritual abuse and programming (cults). I am also a member of the International Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation.

We all imagine a life worth living. We hope to get up each and every day with a clear sense of purpose and self-worth. And sometimes, life becomes overwhelming. The day to day tasks of living may feel insurmountable, and we may even consider giving up or running away from it all. We are pulled in so many directions and feel out of the driver’s seat in our own lives. Relationships we once valued seem meaningless and activities that used to bring us joy no longer do. We need to be reminded of who we are and our value to this world. We all want to be heard, understood and validated.

I primarily work with Autistic individuals of all ages. My work is focused on supporting my clients through either the process of their identification as an Autistic person or understanding what that means in terms of their past, present, and future. I help clients learn ways to mitigate the mental health impact of living life as an Autistic person, in particular through the creative process, but also by learning more about how and why their brains and bodies experience the world the way they do.

Paul Coelho says, “Maybe the journey isn’t so much about becoming anything. Maybe it’s about un-becoming everything that isn’t really you, so you can be who you were meant to be in the first place.” I support clients on the journey back to themselves. We often put pressure on ourselves to “be” a certain way - so much that life can feel like acting instead of living. This acting can feel draining and lead to increased stress, anxiety and depression. I believe that therapy is a space where you can take off the facade and reconnect with your genuine, whole self - finding freedom and renewed vitality. I invite you to begin your journey.

Finding time to focus on taking care of ourselves can be difficult. With the demands of loved-ones, work, and life in general, we may not always be aware of how well we are actually managing our day-to-day lives. It can take a while to pay attention to the fact that the demands of everyday life are taking a toll on us. Or perhaps there is something from the past or present that you or a loved one is having a hard time moving forward from. Whatever the concern, there may have been a change in areas like behavior, appetite, sleep schedule, and/or work performance, just to name a few.

We can sometimes get stuck in negative ways of thinking after a difficult life event, a strained family dynamic, or the loss of a relationship. Clients often come to me with thoughts like “I will never be good enough” or “I have to be perfect to succeed.” You may turn to dieting/overexercising, self-harm, or using substances to cope with these painful thoughts. You may feel guilt and shame for thinking and feeling this way. We get lost in the shuffle of everyday life and start prioritizing others’ needs above our own, sacrificing our own self-worth. We think maybe, just maybe, if I can make others around me happy, all will be okay.

My clients desire to appear confident and in control, but deep down they are quietly struggling to keep it together. They may be fed up with being everyone's "rock", feeling riddled with frustration and anxiety, or wondering who they are outside of all the "hats" being worn. They may not even remember a time things didn’t feel this way. One thing is for sure: they're ready for relief. They come ready to release the things that they've been holding in. They're ready to unhook from the cycle of burnout, numb out, repeat. Most of all, they're ready to step into an authentic relationship with themselves, life & those around them.

Healing is possible. Every one of us has the capacity to heal that lies within us. Due to our childhood and life experiences, our minds sometimes start telling us that we are less than worthy of love. But we are worthy; our healing journey rests in finding that self love and fountain of being. Habit patterns inside of our minds can become challenges to our well-being. We tend to look at sources outside of ourselves for the answers, but they already lie within. “You are the architect of your life.” -Swami Rama

Therapy can feel like a scary step to take. Even more it can be a struggle to just share one's needs/stories. Which is why Diego and I work with each of our Clients in making that fear go away and assisting everyone in feeling comfortable and at ease. One of the first priorities I focus on is working with that fear, that uncomfortable feeling--It Gets Better. Diego is an amazing asset to this team as he will provide comfort to those who experience anxiety during therapy. He can provide decompression for those working through trauma or those experiencing sensory challenges.

6:07am. Remembering that you have already hit snooze seven times is not motivating you to get out of the bed to go about your day. Fear and doubt fill your morning as the reality of present events hits you where you feel it the most. "I have powered through this before" has become your mantra but deep inside you want a change. The past few days you have completed through sheer willpower. You are open to change; you just do not know what it is just yet. Is there any hope? You ask yourself.

How can I find a therapist in 28209?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online or over the phone can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the United States, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

What type of therapist is right for me?

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist, psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
