One of the focuses of my career is to find the points of overlap between the Christian faith and sound counseling practices. This integrated perspective informs all of my professional endeavors. As your counselor, I will use a mind-body-spirit approach to tailor treatment to your individual needs. In each session, my goal is to help you discover and develop new insights and skills to navigate through the often-turbulent waters of life. I aim to help you get results and find solutions, so the amount of time that you may need or want to see me will vary depending on your circumstances.

My work is guided by the truth that we heal in connection with others and can grow stronger by being heard. The "process" looks different for different people because we're all more complicated than one book or chart can cover. It may involve skills work from various evidence-based models such as DBT, ACT, and internal family systems. It may also look like getting your body moving in nature. Sometimes, it is just the work of talking out an issue. The goal is helping you get to whatever you need to keep walking forward on what can be a confusing and difficult path. I would be honored to come alongside you in that.

People typically come to see me because they are either in crisis or because they desire to have a greater understanding of themselves. During a crisis, you may suffer from depressed mood, hopelessness, anxiety/panic, and irritability. While uncomfortable, these symptoms can be informative - a signal to address things in your life and yourself, likely things you have known about for a while, but have been avoiding. We may examine the things that brought you to this place in your life: your family and personal history, current stressors, cultural and societal factors.

There are times in our life when we realize that we can't keep doing it alone and we need to reach out for help. Sometimes people we love hurt us. Intentionally, or unintentionally, we hurt them. We let each other down. Our children who are meant to be our greatest joy sometimes are a source of unimagined worry or pain. At times it feels that our life has not turned out how we believed it should have. This realization can feel lonely, be confusing and cause us tremendous pain. Having a safe person and a healthy, trusting relationship with an experienced therapist can help.

Therapy is about telling the truth, healing old wounds, and making changes. One of my own changes was a midlife transition from philosophy professor to mental health counselor. My former profession shapes both how I work and who I serve. Like some of my best students, many of my clients are too smart and sensitive for your own good. What should be your greatest strengths — insight and empathy — have turned against you as overthinking and anxiety. Let’s get your nervous system back on your side.

My ideal client is someone who is seeking the opportunity to be heard and validated without judgment. Their issues can range from feeling alone to being undervalued. They most often feel unseen by the people they love and go to lengths for their reciprocation. Their own needs, goals, and achievements seem impossible but crucial to fulfill despite their busy life’s journey. They know the world is full of changes. They desire to become assertive and wholly honor themselves. Together, we can explore YOUR journey and YOUR feelings and act accordingly as you move in the direction you want and need.

Do you feel stuck in your head overthinking everything, feeling on edge, or emotionally drained? Anxiety and stress can take a toll on your mind and body, leaving you exhausted, irritable, or disconnected from yourself and others. Sometimes these feelings are tied to past experiences or trauma, even if you’re not sure what “counts” as trauma. Trauma looks different for everyone, and your response is valid. You didn’t choose what happened to you, but you can choose healing. Therapy can help you feel more grounded, find relief from anxiety, and begin to feel like yourself again.

Are you the strong one who always keeps it together — yet inside you feel exhausted, anxious, or disconnected from yourself? You may look fine on the outside, but internally you feel overwhelmed, stuck in survival mode, or unsure how you ended up feeling so far from the woman you used to be. Maybe your mind won’t slow down, your body feels tense, or you’ve noticed changes in your eating, sleep, confidence, or sense of peace. You care deeply for others — and now you’re realizing you need care, too.“I guide women through the process of calming their nervous system, reconnecting with themselves, and moving out of survival mode.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
