Growing up in a family where your emotional and even physical needs were ignored left you feeling overwhelmed and lonely in your adulthood. You may spend hours daydreaming about just fitting in somewhere, anywhere because you never felt you fit in within your own family. You may have wondered if you were adopted and that one day your "real family" would show up and whisk you away to a normal life. Now, you look back on those years feeling deep sadness and anger. You feel cheated. You were cheated. Now as an adult, you struggle with feelings of unworthiness and a general lack of belonging. You deeply desire to connect with others.

**Waitlist**My clients want to connect to others but are afraid. They've learned in childhood that even those that are supposed to love you don't always treat you well. Yet, their deepest desires are to be seen, heard, and accepted. My clients often carry shame or guilt, and also know deep down they have immense strength and resiliency. They have the desire to move forward and live a fulfilled life, but feel stunted, stuck, or frustrated. Does any of this sound or feel familiar? Great news: it doesn't have to be this way! Reach out to me! Together, let’s explore and create a path forward—a healthy way forward—so that you can thrive.

Healing happens by moving through things, not by trying to go around them. My focus in the counseling work I do has long been in the fields of grief and substance use, especially in terms of where grief / loss has fed addictive behavior. It makes sense. Big feelings are uncomfortable, especially the ones we consider negative. It is understandable that we try to avoid those feelings but the reality is it doesn’t work. In my work with people I support them in gently and compassionately facing the things they don’t want to face, whether grief, addiction, anxiety, trauma or a more general sense of not being the person you want to be.

It can be both rewarding and vulnerable to begin or continue therapy: I create a warm, non-judgmental space for reworking old patterns that may not serve you anymore. Life experiences, environment, circumstances, and cultural systems of power all shape our understanding of ourselves, of others, and of the world around us. Together we can explore what matters to you most, where you may feel stuck and how you can find more ease. To inform our work, I primarily draw on your history and relational experiences, your own body’s feedback, information from contemporary neuroscience, and our in-session interactions.

Do you feel safe being who you really are? If you have a marginalized identity or belong to more than one culture, it can be challenging to reconcile who you are with others' expectations of who you should be. Or maybe you usually handle things fine but you've been derailed by a change in your job, health or relationships. To get back on track, you need something that really works for you. Or you've been giving so much to others it feels like there’s nothing left, and self-care is just another item on your To Do list. I get it. I've been there, and what I've learned along the way just might help you too.

Is online therapy a good option?
Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.
What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?
Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.
What type of therapist is right for me?
Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.
Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?
The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.
What type of therapy is right for me?
The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.
Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?
Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
