Relationships are hard—and when they're struggling, it can feel like you're failing at the one thing that matters most. You're not. Whether you're navigating infidelity, repeating the same fights, or feeling a quiet disconnection you can't quite name, you don't have to figure it out alone. People come to therapy when they're ready for something to actually change. As a Gottman-trained therapist at The Relationship Center of Hampton Roads in Norfolk, VA, I offer a structured, evidence-based, judgment-free path toward trust, connection, and lasting change. You've done hard things before. Let's do this one together.

My ideal clients are self-aware professionals and couples who know something isn't working, but aren't sure why. They come to me navigating relationship conflict, communication breakdowns, betrayal, infidelity, emotional disconnection, anxiety, and depression. Many carry relational wounds from their past that quietly shape their present. In our work together, I help clients trace those patterns, rebuild trust, and develop the emotional tools they need to show up differently - in their relationships and in their own lives. Clients choose this practice for the depth, discretion, and the personalized attention quality care requires.

Sex and relationships are the most natural things in the world, so why do they feel so hard sometimes? Maybe you've lost the spark or you've never felt connected in the way you want to. Maybe there's been infidelity or a life transition that you're trying to work through. Or maybe your relationship feels ok, but you wonder whether it could be even better. I want to help you to deeply connect - or reconnect - with your partner.

I work with people who appear to have it all together, but find themselves stressed out, overwhelmed, and unsure of "what to do now". If you're struggling with a relationship or it seems things may never get better and the people around you just don’t understand - I can help. My expertise is with military spouses and professionals in high pressure careers struggling with addiction and trauma. I believe grief and loss touch everyone - breakups, divorce, death, career transitions, illness... we all struggle now and then. I enjoy guiding couples, families and individuals toward healing and creating change in their lives.

As a therapist, my goal is to create a supportive space where clients feel understood and empowered to make meaningful changes in their lives. I work with a variety of concerns, including anxiety, depression, stress, life transitions, and relationship challenges, using evidence-based approaches that are both practical and flexible. My primary methods are Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). CBT helps clients identify and shift patterns of thinking and behavior that may keep them stuck, while ACT focuses on mindfulness, acceptance, and living in alignment with personal values.

You may be high-functioning, self-aware, capable, yet still feel anxious, overwhelmed, or disconnected—especially in relationships. You might overthink, second-guess yourself, or repeat patterns that leave you feeling stuck, even when you understand why they’re happening. If you’re tired of feeling this way, you’re not alone—and change is possible. I work with individuals navigating anxiety, trauma, and relational challenges who are ready for something deeper than just talking. Together, we slow things down, explore what’s beneath the surface, and build more connected, sustainable ways of relating.

Hi, I'm Claire! Clients often come into my therapy office as they face challenges in relationships, self-esteem, transitions, or as they process the impact of trauma they have experienced in their adult lives or throughout their childhood. I utilize evidenced-based practices like EMDR, Internal Family Systems, and CPT and attachment concepts, helping clients find ways to regulate their nervous systems through emotional regulation, create new meaning, and show up for themselves with compassion. I value a collaborative, authentic approach to counseling; I show up as authentically me and invite you to show up as authentically you.

Counseling is a personal journey that is goal-directed and designed to empower you for change. Our counseling practice is dedicated to promoting mental, emotional, and physical health. We believe that as human beings we already have everything we need to flourish. The dilemma is that life happens. Life inevitably introduces various degrees of harm and tragedy into our stories, which often evokes the need for help. Sometimes, seeking help from an expert therapist is the best way to put things into perspective. As a committed, professional mental health group, your well-being, and strength is our priority. We are here to guide you through life's challenges. We incorporate non-traditional interventions in our sessions such as cinema therapy, bibliotherapy, plant therapy, creativity-based therapy, walk and talk therapy, and more. We truly believe that with your strength, and our vision, life is full of possibilities. We look forward to taking the journey with you.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
