My wait list is currently closed. I view the individual wholistically and focus the counseling goals on mental, physical and spiritual well being. In the beginning of the therapeutic process I will take the first few visits to gather information about the concerns you have, the area of your life that you would like to change and the goals you have for yourself. I will use certain assessment tools as appropriate including but not limited to the Adlerian Lifestyle Assessment and a family genogram. After our assessment has been completed in about three sessions, we will agree upon treatment goals for therapy.

I think it's very important to find a therapist who is a GOOD FIT for you with your unique needs. While I think psychodynamically, which means that I focus on helping my clients develop a deeper understanding of themselves and their relationships, I tend to be pragmatic and problem solving. My style is professional, yet relaxed and I'm appreciated for being both compassionate and having a sense of humor in my work. I see my patients in individual psychotherapy and very frequently in group therapy as well. Please note that I am only accepting new patients for group therapy.

For the past 4 decades plus, I have specialized in LGBTQ issues. I currently focus on gender identity issues and assist my transgender clients with navigating their often challenging journeys. As an "out" cisgender lesbian practitioner, I strive to help my LGBTQ clients travel from a place of shame to pride. Much of our work centers on self- esteem and the ways in which homophobia and transphobia impact so many areas of our lives-including family, career, and our intimate relationships. I love animals and also do veterinary counseling and consulting. My style is interactive and casual. I highly value your confidentiality.

Many people are haunted by interpersonal traumas and other wounds that prevent them from living fulfilling lives. Their lives may appear "perfect" from the outside but they struggle with shame, psychological symptoms, engage in self-sabotaging behavior, and feel isolated. I strive to provide a supportive, collaborative, and safe space for individuals to work through their inner experiences to increase awareness of how and why they feel stuck and not satisfied. My focus in therapy is to help individuals explore how their ways of relating to others may hinder growth and wellness and create psychological distress.

Are you regularly feeling overwhelmed? Experiencing intimacy or communication problems in your relationships? Feeling run down and uncertain how to get going again? Let's work together to re-discover your strengths and improve how you feel about yourself and others around you. Our approach to counseling combines Cognitive-Behavioral therapy (CBT) and Mindfulness practices. CBT is a widely used form of therapy with which you will learn (1) to tune into your self-talk, (2) recognize how your self-talk impacts your feelings and decisions, and (3) how to re-frame those unhelpful thoughts into more positive ones.

For over 30 years, I've worked with a wide range of clients to help them identify, understand and address the causes of their distress. Together, we explore the themes and patterns in your life, past and present, that may be interfering with your personal satisfaction and growth. We work to expand your perspective, increase understanding of yourself and your relationships, enhance and develop more effective coping strategies and communication skills. I believe that therapy is most effective in an atmosphere of safety, empathy and collaboration and I strive to foster that through active engagement, openness and flexibility.

I like to work with clients who are insight-oriented, motivated to understand themselves, interested in looking at patterns they get into in relationships, and eager to change and develop their potential. I like it when clients bring up dreams that they would like to understand, and I like clients to think about deeper issues such as meaning in life. I believe that therapy involves a therapeutic relationship, and that the therapist's goal is to collaborate with the client in exploring, gaining insight, and making changes.

I have been in practice since 1981 and particularly enjoy working with clients experiencing life transitions as a result of life events such as divorce, death of a loved one, retirement, career transitions, midlife, etc.and with folks who identify as feeling anxious and depressed, experiencing multiple losses and trying to forge new identities. I work with individuals, couples and families with a wide age range. I am particularly well suited to working with adolescents, young adults and seniors. I also have a long standing specialty in working with disordered eating syndromes.

Maybe you've tried again and again to improve things, but nothing seems to help. Maybe you don't have any place where you can think out loud about what your options really are. If your efforts to improve your life at school, at work, at home or in your relationships have been unsuccessful, you may be feeling stuck. Getting into therapy can be a huge first step toward getting unstuck. But this step requires that you make a decision to try something new. So if you'd like to give it a try, please give me a call.

Is online therapy a good option?
Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.
What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?
Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.
What type of therapist is right for me?
Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist, psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.
Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?
The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.
What type of therapy is right for me?
The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.
Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?
Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
