Hello, I'm Jeremy Robichaud! I came to the world of therapy the long way, following two decades of outdoor leadership, adventure group work, working as a rock and ice climbing guide, and experiential education. I find many connections between my work as an outdoor leader and my work as a therapist. I believe the same principles used by leaders to help folks achieve their goals in the backcountry can apply to our everyday lives. When I am not working as a therapist you can find me at the climbing crag, sailing in Penobscot Bay, skiing, or just working on some unnecessarily elaborate woodworking project.

Life can be complex and meeting goals and finding our own personal meaning are areas I believe hold the answers to some of our most challenging questions. My specialty is working with those who have or are experiencing Domestic Violence, women's issues, negative childhood experiences, and other complex trauma using a Person-Centered approach while considering childhood experiences, attachments, and integrating feminist and environmental/societal considerations. I am EMDR Certified, and a current adjunct professor at Delaware Valley University. I currently work with individuals 14 years of age and above.

You never expected your marriage would turn out this way. Trust issues, the trauma of betrayal… It’s almost as if you’re married to someone different. No one is sleeping, one of you is under a microscope while the other is a private detective. At the same time, fights have become unproductive; filled with accusations and denials. You’ve invested years into this relationship, and now the thought that this could be the end feels terrifying. Should you stay or call it quits? Neither option looks attractive. The pain is unbearable and you just want it to stop. The infidelity in your marriage has created a true emergency.

I believe that the foundation of change in therapy starts with feeling a genuine connection with your counselor. I strive to create a comfortable therapeutic environment that allows my clients to feel safe in sharing with me their thoughts, feelings, and experiences so that healing can begin. I take a holistic approach to counseling. It is important to get to know you as a whole, including emotional, spiritual, social, and physical health, while exploring past and present experiences with conflicts. I then explore with you what aspects could be contributing to current struggles and how to begin to make healthy changes.

I’m dedicated to providing a safe, comfortable therapeutic space, recognizing how overwhelming/intimidating the journey can be. Whether you are struggling with feeling good about yourself, overwhelm, grief, finding life meaning, unhelpful relationship patterns, or anything else weighing on your mind and heart, I would be honored to navigate your journey with you. No concerns are too big or too small-if it matters to you, it matters to me. I believe therapeutic success involves not getting rid of parts of you that struggle but uncovering your inner strengths to cope and reduce symptoms in healthy ways, in addition to acknowledging accomplishments big or small, and trusting the process, as change may take longer or look different than you may expect.

Complex trauma can be an unwanted life companion. Living through repeated exposure to traumatic experiences can leave you feeling unable to trust yourself or others, feeling chronically unsafe, and seeing yourself differently. Alongside those wounds, complicated grief can also be woven into the mix of post-traumatic pain. Complicated grief is much more than “just” a loss - it is sadness, anger, and guilt that cannot always be easily defined. As a licensed professional counselor with a special interest in trauma treatment, I do understand the profound impact these experiences can have on an individual's emotional well being.

Have you ever tried to soothe yourself when your emotions are overwhelmingly intense, only to notice that what used to help you calm down, doesn’t work anymore? Do you struggle with feeling safe when places, people, and/or smells trigger you, and traumatic memories fly back into your mind? Or has life changed so much that you feel stuck, with no idea of what to do to move forward and get that sense of control once more. If any of these things sound like something you’re experiencing, rest assured that you are not alone; and importantly, not broken. Change happens, but so can relief when you start to meet your new needs.

There are many reasons individuals choose to begin therapy. Some seek to gain new perspectives or develop healthier coping strategies, while others wish to change behaviors that no longer serve them. My therapeutic approach is holistic, integrating the mind, body, and spirit to promote overall well-being. I utilize evidence-based interventions, including cognitive restructuring, coping skills training, and trauma-informed practices, to support healing and personal growth.

Helping children reach their full potential, means meeting their needs not only academically, but also socially and emotionally. The pressure to succeed in school can be anxiety producing and lower a child's self-esteem. Through Cognitive Behavioral techniques and play therapy, I help students of all ages take more pride in their accomplishments and help them to overcome the obstacles standing in their way. I will work with children, adolescents and their families as they work to become more resilient and help them reach their goals.

My ideal client is someone who recognizes that they’ve been carrying the weight of past experiences and wants to understand how those experiences continue to shape their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors today. They may be struggling with the effects of trauma, life transitions, or ongoing patterns of self-doubt, anxiety, or relationship difficulties. Often, they come to therapy feeling overwhelmed, disconnected, or unsure of how to move forward—but they have a strong desire to feel more grounded, confident, and in control of their lives.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
