I operate with the assumption that happiness and well being is contingent on good relations with others and a healthy regard for ourselves. Most problems presented in counseling can be understood as disconnection, an inability to embrace ourselves or the people around us. Therapy can be a means of reestablishing meaningful connections by addressing the obstacles that thwart us. These obstacles can take many forms, such as excessive fear, unresolved childhood injuries, stalemated conflicts, distorted beliefs, insecurities, depression or addictions. I have found that therapeutic conversations are a very effective means for overcoming the obstacles to connection, meaning and happiness.

You don’t understand why your family causes you so many sleepless nights. You need someone to talk to but feel shame bringing up family issues or you don’t know where to start. You try to please everyone but you end up being the unhappy one. You cut off toxic family relationships but this leaves you feeling guilt, loneliness, and resentment. You don’t want to be your parents but you don’t know how not to. You doubt if you can live a different life.

I enjoy working with individuals who are interested in promoting well-being in themselves and in relation to others. Mindfulness instruction is available as a key component of my therapy should this focus be desired. Studies have shown that a regular practice of mindfulness supports an enriched experience of life, feelings of well being, better ability to cope with stress and pain, reduced panic, anxiety, and fear and better concentration. I currently only offer tele-health, accessible from the comfort of your own home or office.

I have been in private practice for the past approximately 25 years working primarily with adults, both individually and in couples. Although I have considerable experience with what may be described as more serious anxiety and depressive disorders, my practice more typically has consisted of individuals/couples interested in working on quality of life, relationship and general adjustment issues.

My name is Michele Cotter, and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) based in Pennsylvania. I work with clients of all ages statewide via telehealth. I specialize in treating anxiety, depression, grief, and trauma using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, and Trauma-Informed care to help my clients make progress and start feeling better. Not every theory fits everyone perfectly; so the ability to shift to different perspectives allows a holistic approach to healing.
