Hello! I have been a psychologist for 20+ years. I place a strong emphasis in developing a good rapport and working alliance with clients. I use interventions that are strongly supported by science, such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). I work with older teens and adults to help treat depression and anxiety symptoms, and help patients develop coping skills to manage other stressors associated with difficult life transitions. For decades I have enjoyed working with individuals with diverse backgrounds, including racial and ethnic minority individuals, and members of the LGBTQIA+ communities.

I specialize in Behavioral Medicine interventions that promote physical and psychological health by addressing the mind-body connection. Depression and anxiety do not simply exist in our heads, they reside in our bodies as well. I teach people how to heal themselves using techniques derived from cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness approaches, and positive psychology. Many of my clients have chronic health problems that include heart disease, cancer, neurological disorders, and autoimmune disease. Healing is possible, and we all have the inherent capacity to help ourselves feel better.

With the many professionals available, why work with me? First, you will find unconditional acceptance. I do not have preconceived notions of who you should, or who I need you to be. Instead, I will support you on your journey to discover who you want and deserve to be. I have experience working in both addiction recovery (chemical and food) and mental/spiritual health (trauma, depression, anxiety) so treat you as a whole person, not a diagnosis. Finally, I chose to leave another career and pursue psychotherapy so that I could do what I believe I was meant to do.

Human beings are deeply wired for connection and thrive in relationships that provide safety, love, and acceptance. When we find ourselves alone, isolated, and disconnected, especially when our relationships are suffering, we struggle with self-doubt, shame, and beliefs that we are undeserving and unloveable. It doesn't have to be this way. My goal is to create a space for you to explore your story and deepen your self understanding, putting you on a path to aliveness and connection.

I have been a psychologist for 35 years and work with clients who are interested in exploring their options in how they live in the world. I see the therapeutic process as a dialogue between two partners in exploration and developing resources. For me choice supports health and that clients sometime come with a lack of awareness of these choices or needing to develop more internal and interpersonal supports. I work in the present moment as well as connecting present patterns to client's history as well as the larger contextual field. My approach is relational and somatic from a Gestalt Therapy base.

Any or all of these may sound familiar: you have one or more aspect of your life that feels unmanageable; you are sensitive; you struggle to express yourself to others, resulting in disappointing relationships; you grew up with emotionally immature parents, resulting in feelings of resentment and being unheard.

I fully believe that we must understand where we came from to better understand how we deal with situations today. Our past has made us who we are today, and we respond to our needs by what we have learned from our past. I've spent the last 24 years trying to better understand how to support people as they learn who they want to be and work towards their goals. I try to make a safe and comfortable setting where we can talk about what you want in life and how to achieve it. You will find me to be pretty laid back and easy to talk to.

I am accepting new clients, (teens and adults) in-person and virtually and look forward to meeting for our first session together. As a therapist with a humanistic approach, I strive to support my clients in their position as the center of their treatment. I strongly believe in a client-centered approach that is focused on individual’s strengths and their capacity for growth and healing. During our first session, clients and I discuss why they are entering treatment, their relevant history, and the issues they would like to address in therapy. Together we identify the approaches that are most likely to meet their needs.

Most of the important things in the world have been accomplished by people who have kept on trying when there seemed to be no hope at all. This is a quote by Dale Carnegie. It is what we truly believe to be true. Hope is always present even when you can't see it. We pride ourselves in helping others see the hope and courage they have inside of them.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
