As a psychotherapist and psychoanalyst I work with adults, young adults and adolescents around issues of depression, anxiety, loss and trauma. My practice includes those who are at the edge of major life changes and those who feel themselves outside the norm. I work with survivors and children of survivors of trauma, whether inter-familial or war-related, as well as those who find themselves living in multiple worlds (cultural, socioeconomic, racial, ethnic, religious, etc.). Areas of focus include adoption, immigration, and identity.

I am a licensed clinical psychologist and psychoanalytic candidate at Psychoanalytic Association of NY (affiliated with NYU Medical School). I have over 25 years of experience providing psychotherapy to adolescents, adults, and couples. My approach is broadly psychodynamic/psychoanalytic. Engaging in psychotherapy requires bravery. Talking about yourself to a stranger and facing your issues can feel daunting. Yet, psychotherapy can be exciting and illuminating as it leads you to discover more about yourself, such as why you keep doing the same thing over and over and what is holding you back from living more fully and freely.

Do you feel that your trauma is stopping you from living your life to the fullest? Perhaps you are living in addiction or navigating a loved one’s substance abuse. Maybe you’re going through a life change or grieving a relationship, career path, or loved one. Any one of these challenges can push even the healthiest person to a place they have never been before. Often, traumas can cascade, one thing after another, into a whirlpool of dread, and keeping your head above water can feel next to impossible. I want you to know that you do not need to go it alone. Helping people weather life's storms is my passion.

Often, we come to therapy searching for answers about ourselves or the people we love. Adults might ask: How can I better manage my emotions? How does the way I learn or think shape my experiences? Parents may wonder: Why do small moments trigger such big reactions in my child? How can I better understand my child’s behavior? As a therapist, my goal is to create a warm, collaborative, and safe space where we can explore these questions together. Using an integrative approach, I aim to empower clients to reflect, experiment, and try new ways of engaging—both in and beyond the therapy room.

I believe that the foundation of successful treatment is trust. To facilitate that I provide a safe, nonjudgmental, open environment to partner and build that trust with my clients. Therapy creates a space for people to be seen, heard and be their authentic selves. It can be a way of showing up for yourself and exploring parts that may not feel safe to express in other areas of your life. I approach therapy with curiosity, respect, collaboration, empathy, humor and creativity. I welcome people of all backgrounds and identities. My approach is psychodynamic (exploring your inner world and looking at how it impacts your life.)

I collaborate with you to uncover and remove what stands in the way of being fully yourself and creating the life you truly desire. Building trust and connection is essential to feeling safe enough to explore the places where you feel stuck or unprocessed. These areas often contribute to struggles with depression, anxiety, panic, and other challenging emotions—and can lead us to repeat patterns or relationships that no longer serve us. We work together to heal old wounds and move you in the direction of your goals.

Crucial to my work is helping people to find what works for them; it's not always easy to figure out the best path in life or in therapy. If I can't be of optimal help, I always offer other resources. I establish a partnership and offer suggestions of alternative behaviors to try between sessions. My goal is not compliance with the suggestions, but awareness of the experience of either trying the new behavior or considering it and rejecting it. Either way, we learn.

The ordinary acts of speaking and listening, in the extraordinary context of the psychoanalytic setting, make it possible to discover oneself anew, or perhaps for the very first time.

Things can look and seem really good on the outside. you may have done a lot of work but in therapy before, but you still struggle with your relationships and with your self-esteem. That negative core belief (I'm not enough; I'm unlovable, etc.) you have about yourself is still there and won't go away. You find you either overreact or under-react. Old thoughts/feelings, excessive anxiety, addictions, ruptured attachments, low confidence or depression has you feeling stuck, and you want better for yourself and for those around you. You want your inner world to match the goodness of your outer world. You want congruency.

Experience has taught me that there is no single script for a successful therapeutic endeavor. You bring to each encounter exactly what you are experiencing in the moment. You may arrive looking for clarity, healing, or hope. Our task is to clear some space to enable new thoughts and perspectives to emerge. Insight can lead to change, but not always in a straight line. Our ongoing conversation is the place of discovery, dynamic struggle, and meaning making, all of which contribute to new ways of relating and perceiving.

It's hard to be a person, and therapy can be a remarkable resource. I work with folks that want to feel less anxiety, want to feel more authentic and secure in their sense of self, and/or want to understand and change the way that they connect with others in their work or personal lives. I frequently work with clients in the queer community, new (or new-ish) parents, and folks grappling with perfectionism, complex trauma, and the challenges of big and small life transitions.

I work primarily using a mindfulness method called Recreation of the Self (RCS) created by Jon Eisman. RCS is about awakening and liberation. You have an innate, unbroken, whole, Organic Self which holds the blueprint for your life. The wounding you experienced caused pain, overwhelm, and confusion and you fragmented your consciousness into many trance-like wounded states of consciousness to deal with this, separating yourself from your natural organic nature and Self. You then came to identify with these states as actually you, leading to anxiety, depression and other self-limiting and self-defeating beliefs and behaviors.

If you're feeling disconnected or struggling with relationships or daily life, know you're not alone. Many of the people I work with have experienced childhood trauma, neglect, emotional abuse, or moments of feeling detached, distant, or “checked out” from themselves or the world. Healing doesn’t have to be faced alone—it’s okay to show up just as you are, with all the complexities that come with it. Together, we’ll explore what feels overwhelming, slowly and expansively, allowing space for healing at your own pace.

Are you having difficulty feeling secure in relationships? Do you overthink a lot? Maybe you’re someone who needs to talk right away when someone's unhappy and you won't feel better until things are solved. You get nervous when your partner asks for space. You feel responsible for making other people happy all the time, often at your own expense. You’re emotionally exhausted, stuck and ready for a change. You’re ready to feel more yourself in relationships and stop overthinking, overdoing and worrying. Most of all, you’re ready to live a more connected and fulfilling life, where your needs get met, too. I want to help you get there.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
