Seeking therapy is an acknowledgment that something is in the way of living and expressing your true essence. Together, we will work to understand the inner processes and unconscious forces that influence and limit you. This will include developing a dialogue with your interior world, and discovering what your patterns, symptoms and suffering are trying to tell you. Ultimately, the goal is to live with more imagination, joy, and freedom. Areas to explore may include anxiety and depression; grief; relational/relationship issues; family dynamics; life transitions, as well as spiritual questions.

Therapy serves many functions within each session and over time, including: support, validation, knowledge & education, understanding self and insight, boundary development, & relationship building. Reasons for therapy can encompass overarching goals involving career or continuing education, life transitions in parenting or as a couple, seeking deeper meaning, learning to balance daily stressors, or finally feeling ready to take action. At the core of my approach is the relationship between us, built on empathy & unconditional positive regard.

Seeking out psychotherapy is an investment in yourself so that you can reach your dreams and overcome emotional hurdles like depression, anxiety, trauma, loss, and addictions. I have experience helping hundreds of people jump over these types of hurdles and get more of what they want from life. In addition to traditional psychotherapy, I offer qEEG, which helps to diagnose and predict cognitive issues based on neurologically distinct brain activity, as well as Neurofeedback to successfully target those areas in the brain identified by the qEEG as dysregulated, resulting in reduction of symptoms and increase in optimal functioning.

If you're considering starting therapy, you are suffering in some way. That's what gets us here. You may find yourself worried, feeling down, having problems in your relationships....things can feel blocked. We all go through these times in our lives. Working together, we can find the opportunity for growth in these difficulties, and the way forward. Your life can come more into focus, you can realize what you really want, and go after it. You didn't choose these difficulties, or the extraordinary times we live in, but within the difficulties is a call to your future.

Even if we don't know the exact path to take, sometimes it's the willingness to take some action that can meaningfully move us toward the right outcome. I deeply enjoy my work as a therapist and have been helping individuals and couples to overcome and manage difficult setbacks and major transitions for over 15 years. I always begin with a thorough assessment so we can better collaborate on the shifts that will help bring about lasting and meaningful change. I specialize in mood disorders and anxiety. I've published five books--Undoing Depression is probably the most familiar---on depression, stress, and happiness, My latest, "Rewire," was released August 2014, and I'm working on a new book about self-destructive behavior. My approach is basically psychodynamic, with a lot of CBT and mindfulness. I believe that anyone can change--the brain can literally be rewired--but it takes a lot of patience and practice. Most of the people I meet have been battered around by life, and it's left scars--difficulty hoping, difficulty trusting. It's my job to mobilize that hope and trust.

As a holistic psychotherapist and deep soul diver, I view every life as a sacred story that is open to interpretation, especially your own. In many ways, I consider myself a spiritual midwife of sorts, helping you emerge from difficult life transitions with more confidence, clarity, and compassion for yourself and others because, after all, we're only human. I take an intuitive, informed and sometimes playful approach to self discovery that respects each person's unique strengths, gifts, and situation. My clients often tell me they feel very seen and understood, and that my insights are very helpful.

Octavia Butler put it very well: “hidden within change is surprise, delight, confusion, pain, discovery, loss, opportunity, and growth.” I’m here to help you shape that change, by giving you time, space, and guidance as you need, to find obstacles and ways through them—and to help you bear the pain that comes with change, as you grow into a life you can explore and enjoy. Through exploring your history and present conflicts in a secure environment, you gain insight, self-acceptance, choice instead of repetition, a voice that feels authentic, and the ability to tolerate discomfort and uncertainty.

If you are seeking to regain who you once were, uncover who you know you could be, become who you want to be, build on who you already are, or all the above, we can do that together. Life is something that just is; we are what happens in it. I work with you to reclaim what may seem out of your control, to step back into the driver's seat of your own life. We all struggle at times and it is not about how strong or weak we are, but how much support we have.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
