Making the decision to engage in therapy can be challenging. It's important that you find a therapist you can connect with in order to have a fulfilling experience. The choice to work with me can be the basis for you to feel comfort in processing presenting issues and exploring needs for growth/change. My goal is to help you find comfort in this relationship and work together with you to explore your personal needs and desires for therapy. By using cognitive behavioral, strength based and mindfulness treatments I will support you in this process.

Are you feeling overwhelmed, stressed, burnt out, or anxious? Is it hard to remember the last time you felt "like yourself"? Is your anxiety interrupting your sleep or your day to day functioning? Do you feel stuck in a rut, unsure how to change course? Are you trying to make sense of childhood traumatic and/or significantly stressful experiences? Or have you recently experienced a traumatic event and want the stress and 'alarm bells' to decrease so you can feel the way you did before the event?

You’ve got everything under control, except for when everything falls apart. It can feel debilitating to work so hard to keep your life on track and then feel overwhelmed by fear or shame or anger at a moment’s notice. You double down on trying to control it but it never seems to be possible and you’re worried that the life you’ve carefully built won’t be able to withstand more bumps. You know your stuff, you /understand/ what you should be doing but you can’t seem to get there and you feel stuck and embarrassed. Repeat repeat.

We often lose ourselves in an attempt to fulfill those everyday life roles. You know the roles we play everyday as parents, partner, child, employee, and friend? When do we ever take the time to truly put ourselves!?! Unfortunately, most of us fail to ever do so, but this has to stop and the time is now! You matter! Your goals matter! If you are not good to yourself, how can you ever be any good to someone else! I have experience working with a variety of populations such as those experiencing severe persistent mental illness, substance use, anxiety, depression, adjustment disorder, LGBTQ issues, relationships issues and much more.

I believe that at their very core, human beings desire to live meaningful, connected lives. Using a cognitive, as well as existential and spiritual approach, I will help you engage your suffering in a fresh way so you can live a more present, contented existence. I am a mindfulness-based, existential psychotherapist located in Brooklyn, New York. My ideal client is someone who is interested in an alternative to Western psychology and has some interest or experience in Eastern thought or spirituality. Anyone who has found usefulness in psychedelics in the past could also be a good fit.

Whether you can put a specific name to your struggles or feel an elusive 'something' not quite right in your life, a successful therapeutic experience can address these issues in a meaningful way. Drawing from a psychodynamic/relational perspective, I aim to deeply understand you and explore your experiences, thoughts, and your feelings. Using the therapeutic relationship as a base for our work, we can reflect how these elements relate to and inform your life. With deeper insight and practice with new ways of relating to self and others you can make place for more satisfying choices in your life.

Maybe it's been two months or two years, but it has not been easy. Whether it's your personal life, work life, familial, platonic, or romantic relationships. You may have begun to feel overwhelmed, annoyed, stressed, lonely and even depressed. You compare yourself to others and wonder why your life is not a reflection of the work you've put into it or how you imagined it would be.

When we don't feel our best, it is a challenge to fully engage with life and unleash our true potential. Life transitions, grief, trauma, depression and other stressors can leave us stuck and feeling like the life we truly want to live is out of reach. It is my firm belief each of us has the power inside to heal and transcend these types of limitations. Through compassionate, supported inquiry, we can dismantle the blocks that keep us from our most deeply held desires. I am here to assist in that process. Through a holistic approach that honors the mind, body and spirit, I am dedicated to helping you move forward.

I specialize in working with interracial couples, retirees, and people who are coping with an illness and/or disability. I believe that our identities such as gender, age, race, ethnicity, class, health status, sexual orientation, where we grew up, etc, influence how we experience the world and how others view and interact with us. The understanding of how the larger societal forces influence us is not only relevant but necessary in the therapeutic and healing process.

I'm passionate about helping clients recognize and break unhealthy patterns in their lives, particularly involving close relationships. I work with individuals and couples on cultivating more understanding and compassion for self and others, and on more caring and effective navigation of relationship conflicts. I support clients in advocating for their own needs, desires and boundaries in relationships, and on better understanding the perspectives and needs of others. I welcomed a child at the height of Covid-19 (2020), and I enjoy working with new parents on maintaining self-care and personal fulfillment while parenting young kids.

I work with clients to build insight and skills that help to clarify challenges and maximize joy. Whether you're transitioning into a different phase of life or feeling stuck (hello, pandemic!), I will meet you there with curiosity and compassion. Together, we'll use a variety of techniques to identify both the barriers and the opportunities to lead the kind of life you want. While there is great strength in practicing healthy coping, self-care, and positive self-talk, I know that this is often much easier said than done! Sometimes we just need help developing, prioritizing and applying these skills and awareness in our daily lives.

I work with adolescents and adults on a wide range of challenges from general counseling and adjustment issues (feeling "stuck") to more clinical issues such as depression, anxiety, trauma and sexual issues. I focus on LGBT clients, particularly in the area of transgender identity, but have a diverse client base overall. I have experience working with clients that have issues related to polyamory, the kink community, and navigating these issues within relationships. I also have interns and supervisees that can see sliding scale clients from various populations.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Brooklyn?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
