Pregnancy and parenthood can evoke a mixed of emotions that may be overwhelming and scary for some new and expectant mothers/couples. I received training to become a Perinatal Mental Health Provider to work with women, parents and families that have been impacted by a Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorder, women that are experiencing postpartum distress and couples who want support transitioning into parenthood. Unresolved conflicts, mental health concerns and relationship issues can negatively impact maternal mental health, parental mental health and your child's development.

I specialize in cultural and gender specific issues, particularly with women of color and the special obstacles they face due to the fact that many are not taught to date. This is a very important skill that leads to relationship stability and happiness. On the other hand men face obstacles regarding their challenges of staying faithful and oftentimes blame "biology" and their mates for this instead of getting to the core of the problem and the anxiety they feel when contemplating commitment and monogamy.

Do you ever sit and wonder “what the eff is happening to me”? You know you don’t feel like yourself, and when people ask how you’re doing, you’re not sure how to answer them. Or you’re not even sure how to answer that in your head. Welp, let's talk. I know I’ll sound like a cliche saying this but, this is exactly what therapy is. I like to think of myself as google translate that takes those “I don’t know” and “ I feel off”, etc… and helps you pinpoint what IS going on and in the process help you with being able to communicate it, whether it be to your parents, family, friends or a stranger.

When you reflect on your relationships with your parents/caregivers, does it bring up hurt, feelings of being undervalued, or misunderstood. Do you find yourself wading through the waters of the impact of those relationships which has resulted in constantly striving for perfection or approval from your parents or others? Perhaps you are fed up of this pattern but you’re unsure of how to break it.

At times, it can seem hard to talk share about what is going on with your life. You may have a support system, but at times if can be hard to share your innermost thoughts and feelings with them. I know that sharing things can be hard because they may not understand, or they can be dealing with their own things, or not wanting to burden them. I get it. I know that therapy can provide a safe space. Opening up to a stranger can seem like a challenge, but this can also be a benefit. In therapy we can have the space to really talk about what is going on, in a non judgmental space.

Therapy is a complex dynamic that unravels various topics that may be uncomfortable and challenging to face but doing so provides relief leading to healing and entering a new phase in your life. Developing appropriate coping skills to manage emotions, life stressors, and problems is key within sessions. Oftentimes, we build maladaptive coping skills due to modeled behavior, life experiences, or simply for survival so challenging them may seem impossible, but I am here to say it is not. Disrupting those maladaptive skills will require patience with yourself but having support in therapy makes the process obtainable and manageable.

Are you a professional managing a career, dealing with family obligations or perhaps addressing life transitions that are causing you to feel insecure and unmanageable? I get it. There are days when you may feel like you’ve lost control, unable to make decisions or questioning your choices because you’re feeling overwhelmed. You may even want to give up! And that’s OK. We don’t always have the answers or the energy to do it all. The expectations that others put on us or the ones we put on ourselves, rarely gives us permission to make mistakes. When do you give yourself permission to care of YOU?

You have made the first step! Mental Health is the only part of our wellness we tend to neglect. Take a minute to think about it. If one of your loved one's were to say or complain about chest pain, I’m sure you would not hesitate to seek help. We want to see our loved one's live a long and healthy life and if we could assist in that process, we are going to do everything in our power to do so. Wouldn't you agree? Then what about our mental health? This is what we tend to ignore.

Therapy is not a "one size fits all." Each person is unique, individual, autonomous and complex, we all face situations in a particular way, and that is why when going to a professional, care must be personalized for each individual.

Therapy offers a space where you can slow down and learn from your life experiences. Our conversations will help you develop a greater understanding of who you are, including the parts of yourself that you might want to change. Over time you can begin to let go of ways of coping and being that, while comfortable and familiar, are no longer serving you. We’ll work together to address what’s getting in the way of having a life that is more authentic and emotionally healthy.

The problems which humans face can be daunting. Often so complex, whether it is physical, spiritual, emotional or psychological; can impact our ability to function at our fullest potential. It is often difficult for us to initiate a healthy beginning, but it is important for us to begin in a direction which is most beneficial to our overall wellbeing. It is essential that we understand how our upbringing, beliefs, and societal factors influence our behavior. Believing that everyone is deserving of therapeutic guidance; I am currently offering sessions below the current market value.

I am a Mental Health Counselor with over 10 years in the mental health field. I prefer for my sessions to be more conversational and less rigid and “clinical,” as clients seem to respond best to a more relaxed flow. I truly want us to be partners in our therapeutic relationship. I always strive to ensure my clients feel like their emotions are validated, that they have a safe space to open up and be vulnerable, and that they are free from judgement during our time together. Is online therapy a good option?
Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.
What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?
Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.
What type of therapist is right for me?
Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist, psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.
Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?
The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.
What type of therapy is right for me?
The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.
Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?
Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
