I believe that healing starts with a strong therapeutic relationship and focus on establishing an accepting, trusting environment. This foundational relationship and your courage and willingness allow for deep exploration into your inner world. As a client, you will take an active role in the therapeutic process and together, we'll aim to awaken the autopilot that many of us default to and move towards living life more intentionally and authentically. Through compassionate and curious exploration, we will bring mindful awareness to patterns that may be interfering with your life.

I believe that meaningful change begins within the safety of a trusting therapeutic relationship. That’s why first and foremost I work to create a secure space with you where vulnerability and processing difficult emotions feels possible, and ultimately rewarding. Whatever it is that brings you to therapy, be it feelings of anxiety, hopelessness, overwhelm, anger, or sadness, or simply greater self-understanding, know that I will meet you with empathy, authenticity, and unconditional positive regard. I work with adults, teens and couples struggling with depression, anxiety, relationship challenges, and perinatal mental health.

As a clinician, I’ve seen how old wounds and ways of surviving restrict our ability to feel, work and love freely. But I’ve also seen therapy’s capacity to unlock possibility, vitalize identities, and widen our horizon of choice. My job is to help you speak what's on your mind so I strive to foster an environment that is reliable and non-judgmental. I use curious, empathic listening to explore unformulated experiences and the origins of your difficulties. Mental health symptoms are not only pain and suffering but also messages about conflicted desires. It takes intimacy and a strong alliance to speak and listen to these messages.

I believe we are all on a journey towards our best self. Sometimes we can get a little lost on that journey. We lose sight of that best self. We may even lose sight of ourselves entirely. There can be so many reasons, or maybe it seems like there’s no reason at all. How did you get here, and more importantly, how can you get to where you want to be? How can you reconnect with that best self? That’s what I’m here to help you do. If we work together, we’ll explore your past, examine your present, and map out a future where you can be who you want to be.

To me, psychotherapy is an endeavor which involves, very simply, two people talking to each other with curiosity and openness in order to fully understand the needs and questions of one person. Even in the Covid age working via video or phone sessions, I believe that the heart of therapy resides in the therapeutic relationship. Within this relationship, I listen closely for how one's past might be seeping into one's present in ways that seem to get in the way of contentment. My style is interactive and engaged - face-to-face.

Psychotherapy and psychoanalysis are potentially useful ways to connect more productively with the myriad challenges of what it means to be human. The patients I work best with are curious about how to change their current behavior to reduce psychological difficulties, as well as to address how their prior history has influenced their current situation. I hold a Ph.D. in clinical psychology, and a certificate in psychoanalysis from the William Allison White Institute. In addition, I have also completed advanced training in Emotionally Focused Therapy for couples.

There's nothing "wrong" with you. I've been practicing for a number of years and can tell you without a doubt that anxiety, depression, fear, anger and insecurity are all aspects of the human condition. Everybody has them to some degree - though of course they can reach a level of intensity where we feel the need to reach out for help.

I enjoy helping my patients figure out what is not working for them in their lives --whether the issues are professional or personal. I have been working in private practice for over fifteen years, with patients covering a wide range of issues. All they had in common was a desire to create change, and willingness to talk about their lives, thoughts and feelings honestly. Please contact me via email for expedience.

As a therapist, I work with adults navigating a wide array of challenges including anxiety, relationship difficulties, identity questions, grief, and periods of transition. Many of the people I work with feel disconnected from themselves, from others, or from a sense of meaning and are looking for something deeper than surface-level coping strategies.

I am a lifelong New Yorker and understand the stresses that accompany the rich experiences and opportunities of city life. I understand how the city's pace and culture can make it difficult to ask for help; it can be even harder for those struggling with anxiety, depression, or relationship challenges. You may be discouraged or wonder if there’s any possibility for change. Whatever brings you to therapy, rest assured that I will respect and honor the courage required to make that change in a caring and supportive environment.

The most healing aspect of therapy is the unique relationship between a client and therapist. I value the vulnerability and mutual trust created with my clients when they allow me to be a part of their stories. You can expect to leave sessions feeling heard and empowered, with a renewed connection to self and/or the world.

I have years of experience helping clients deal with anxiety, depression and anger problems and with couples who are looking to reduce marital conflict. When new clients call me they are looking for help in coping so they can feel better and handle their life challenges more effectively. Some people are looking for understanding of what happened and how they got here, and some are more interested in learning coping skills quickly, and most want some combination of both approaches. I listen to what their individual wants and needs and plan accordingly.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
