Life is beautiful! Living is painful! Our challenge is to make meaning out of the sound and the fury and find peace and satisfaction where we can. Let's explore the thoughts and emotions that shape your inner experience, and notice how these inform the actions that you manifest in the world. The tension among these aspects of experience can be the root source of much confusion and suffering. Productive therapeutic work supports our efforts to find loving acceptance of what lies within, which enables us to act more authentically and effectively as we move through the world.

I specialize in the treatment of what are often interconnected problems (mood and anxiety disorders, chronic pain, and trauma), as well as the treatment of behaviors that can develop in response, such as substance use (in an effort to self-medicate). I believe we all do the best we can to cope with pain, using whatever skills we have available. And yet sometimes our best efforts to avoid suffering can serve to keep us stuck retreading the same paths. Step by step, let's venture forward in our work together, letting suffering subside as we uncover meaning, learning to live more full and valued lives.

Hello! I am a sex-positive, sexuality and gender identity-affirming therapist working with individuals, couples and partners. I work with people at any stage of coming out and living. I am easy to talk to about non-traditional relationship models, such as polyamory and kink. With couples and partners I often coach empathic listening and validation skills, and then experiment with relationship agreements to serve you better.

At the heart of my work, I believe the relationship is key to supporting my clients. It is essential to me that I build trust with my client so they can feel seen and understood. In a world where so many of my friends and family have had a hard time finding a therapist that works for them, I prioritize this. People want to show up to a session where they can connect, be heard and not feel judged. I practice cultural humility and empathy with an understanding that our lives are imperfect. I have supported my clients through a range of issues from anxiety, to executive functioning and managing a challenging time in their life.

Although some struggle is an inevitable part of life, there is the danger of accepting continual pain & struggle as "the way life is". This way of thinking can keep a person trapped, unable to even imagine what "better" would look like. Therapy offers a way out. For some, the traumas suffered in the past make it difficult to find happiness. Others may find themselves behaving in ways that leave them feeling worse, or once again in the same hurtful relationships. Some may be consumed with regrets about past mistakes, or filled with fear of the future, missing opportunities to live well in the present.

I am a curious, creative and compassionate therapist. My approach is client-centered and trauma-informed, believing all individuals have the right to be heard, respected and seen. I enjoy partnering with adults to provide a safe space where they can express themselves. I work well with people who are looking to discover more about themselves, their values, building boundaries and how to walk through the world with more independence. I also work with those who have a history with adverse religious experiences, including LGBTQIA+ folx, who are learning to trust themselves and their bodies. Bonus if you have a creative streak!

Therapy nurtures the power of the human spirit and its vast capacity for development and transformation. My approach emphasizes compassion and communication as key components in building, healing, and maintaining healthy relationships. I believe that encouragement, understanding, knowledge and action promote growth in the family system and in each individual family member.

How can I find a therapist in 10034?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

What type of therapist is right for me?

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist, psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
