Mental health treatment should not be traumatic. I am drawn to clinical work with individuals who have been historically mislabeled and misunderstood. I have successfully worked with many individuals whose prior negative treatment experiences gave them every reason in the world not to trust me. I have also provided effective counsel to emergency room physicians and nurses. I recognize the degree of stigma (often self-imposed) associated with medical professionals seeking mental health treatment. My experience in psychiatric emergency services has given me a true appreciation of the unique stressors front line workers face.

Is your adolescent or young adult struggling with emotional ups and downs, social isolation, low self-esteem, behavioral or academic challenges, or rigid thinking? As a parent, watching your child face obstacles that leave them feeling isolated or overwhelmed is heartbreaking. Adolescents often become trapped in rigid patterns of control that can be difficult to break—but with the proper support, they can develop self-worth, resilience, and stronger relationships while improving academic success. I work closely with parents, offering guidance and tools to create a path toward emotional well-being, and stronger family connections.

Naturally, as we live we develop ways of coping in an attempt to thrive. However, we sometimes face painful life experiences and become stuck, experience decreased self esteem, or strained relationships. We may have difficulty harnessing our inner strengths resulting in pain and confusion. Therapy can empower you to thrive during times of change.

Hi! I utilize an eclectic therapeutic approach with a focus in developing therapeutic rapport and trust first. I have prior experience working with individuals with trauma, anxiety, depression, psychotic disorders and mood and personality disorders. Many of our symptoms and traits can teach us something if we lean into it, this can help us to determine the root of our pain. Healing is possible for for all of us in a society that will condition us to believe other wise.

Since 2009, I have been passionate about helping folks heal and connect to themselves and others. I pride myself on being open minded, compassionate, and empathetic psychotherapist. Struggles in self-esteem, identity, difficult life changes, relationships, and transitions are worthy of support. I have extensive experience with folks navigating symptoms related to trauma, depression, anxiety, substance use, eating disorders, self-harm, and/or other behavioral and psychological distress. Though I am psychodynamically oriented, I am also extensively trained in CPT for trauma and DBT and use these and other techniques as needed.

We all struggle sometimes and while family and friends may want to help, they may not have the tools you need to make changes, solve problems, or make decisions. Having someone to talk to who is unbiased and non-judgmental can be most helpful when we feel lost or face barriers to our hopes and dreams.

Something horrible happened that never should have happened. You oscillate between actively avoiding thinking about it and blaming yourself, even though you know it’s not your fault. You used to be better at avoiding it, but recently the details of the incident are flooding your mind day and night; memories which were once contained are now spilling over. You’re feeling disconnected from yourself and others, even though most people around you think you are fine. Despite your outward success, you feel that you could collapse into a million pieces at any moment and that this is exhausting.

“Unconditional Positive Regard” - the idea of being accepted and supported, no matter what. Unconditionally. While it would be nice to always be surrounded by people who provide it, if you aren’t, you can find it in our space together. A firm believer in solution-focused, strengths-based, and action-oriented therapeutic approaches, Arika Adams, LCSW, has had over a decade of working with children and families who have experienced trauma, including significant work with adoptive families - particularly those adopting older children - and families struggling with addiction.
