Hello, my name is John Thibodeau and I've been a counselor for 21 years. I meet clients where they are in life and provide a place where they can; let defenses down and be their genuine selves, express themselves freely and feel understood, reflect upon life experiences and patterns, process past and current trauma, develop practical tools and coping skills, and cultivate a life in which they feel more present and whole. I combine attentive listening and empathy with practical feedback and insights. And I warmly encourage clients to look at themselves and their lives with more curiosity and understanding, and less judgment.

As a counselor, I bring unconditional positive regard, a belief in individual strengths, and an unwavering commitment to you. I am genuine, empathic, intuitive, and passionate about helping you. I use person centered therapy first and foremost; meaning that I'm always looking for the good in you, believing in you and supporting you to make your life feel it's most fulfilled. For each person that's different - for some it's "happiness", for some it's being present or mindful, and for some it's managing symptoms so other things can be balanced in their life. From this support, I hope to create a space where you can pursue your needs.

As a therapist my goal is to help people attune to their own set of needs, restore a healthy relationship with themself, and find a way to navigate the world authentically with grace and purpose. My approach is collaborative and begins with a thorough assessment, after which, we work together to develop a treatment plan. My goal is for clients to know what they are working on before the session, feel a sense of accomplishment throughout the session, and ultimately leave the session feeling proud. Assessments and treatment plans help clients develop a common language and also approach session time with a high level of intention.

Even the most productive of us struggle internally with feelings of anxiety and doubt, loneliness and despair. Our minds need healing. Our relationships could use attention and repair. Our role on this planet isn't to live without struggle, but through it, flawed and fierce, loving and humble. My role is to help individuals do this work: to live more deeply into their lives, through both the pain and their joy.

I am a seasoned clinician who has worked with adults, couples and families for over 30 years. Increased awareness leads to increased options. Often the work of therapy is about making or repairing connections--interpersonal, internal or perhaps even spiritual. I provide individual adult psychodynamic psychotherapy; couples counseling: marital, pre and post divorce. I use a multi modal approach often including assessment and treatment from a family systems perspective and a psychodynamic perspective. I reserve a portion of my practice to provide a safe and intriguing space for children to express themselves and to be understood by adults. Facilitated parent-child sessions often help.

My areas of specialty are; supporting neurodivergent individuals and their families with finding acceptance, as well as with adolescents who are struggling with regulating their mood, emotions, or impulses. With both populations, I emphasize establishing healthy relational patterns, improving boundaries, acceptance, psychoeducation, and skill building. I have also found success working with young adults with ADHD who are struggling to manage executive skills leading to anxiety and stress. The intersection of trauma with above populations is salient and I invite clients experiencing anxiety and depression as a result.

Life can be demanding. Maybe your to-do list never seems to stop growing and you've lost sight of what actually brings you joy. Perhaps worrying about the future, or fixating on the past keeps you from ever truly being in the moment. Maybe your inner critic is bossy, you tend to overthink interactions, and you demand perfection from yourself even if you know it's unrealistic. Does it feel difficult to decompress? Does what happened to you in the past feel still like it’s stealing from today?
Burnout, anxiety, and the impact of trauma can be so noisy. I'd love to help you turn down the volume.

Are you a parent of a child who is struggling? Are you struggling as a parent? Could you use someone to connect with and process male or dad-specific challenges? We can often reach a place where our coping skills and strategies are no longer serving us, whether due to a traumatic event, clinical diagnosis, personal change or stubborn family patterns. If this speaks to you or what you are experiencing, the hope I can offer is that you already have the internal capacity to make meaningful changes that will affect positive outcomes.

Life is full of surprises and challenges that can leave us feeling unsure, overwhelmed, or worse. The death of a loved one, difficult relationships, loss of a job or an ideal, divorce, serious illness, caregiver fatigue-just to name a few-can leave us feeling that we are adrift in uncharted territory. To me, therapy is a process of self-exploration and discovery that can lead to personal growth. This process can help us better manage what life throws our way as we discover and give value to our inner resources and what is most important to us.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?
The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.
Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?
Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.
Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?
The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.
How much does therapy cost?
The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.
What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?
Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.
Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?
Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
Is online therapy a good option?
Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.
Are therapy sessions confidential?
Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
