In my 25+ years as a psychologist, I have worked in college mental health, served as a dean of counseling at MIT, and directed a group practice. In the latter role, I've worked with adults and adolescents addressing anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, school and job stress, parenting and other relationship issues, and various life transitions. While I consider myself well grounded in psychological theory, I don't believe that any one school of thought has all the answers: Like most therapists, I draw from multiple orientations, taking care to focus on what best fits a client's needs rather than on preconceived clinical bias.

Dr. Paul Miller practices psychotherapy with older adolescents and adults. Although Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and related approaches provide the core of his practice, he integrates other modalities that suit the needs of his patients. He works with people coping with anxiety, mood and adjustment disorders, shame, and ADHD, and with adults with trauma histories. Dr. Miller enjoys working with adults who are wary about psychotherapy but are willing to give it a try. He brings a warm, personable, and down-to-earth approach to his work.

I am a clinical psychologist who works with adolescents and young adults struggling with issues such as depression, anxiety, self-harm, school challenges, and interpersonal difficulties. In addition to working as a therapist, I hold faculty appointments at Harvard Medical School and McLean Hospital, where I previously worked as a staff psychologist and continue to serve as a supervisor. My experience in these roles enables me to work effectively with young people whose distress is particularly overwhelming and incapacitating.

Are you stuck in the same relational patterns, reacting in ways that do not match how you want to show up? Do you feel disconnected from others? Even when you try to communicate or behave differently, the same conflicts or misunderstandings keep happening. These patterns often have deeper roots in earlier experiences that continue to shape how you relate, trust, and respond. They also often present as anxiety, depression, stress, general unhappiness, or frustration. I work with adults and couples navigating childhood trauma, childhood emotional neglect, and relationship conflict who want deeper understanding and lasting change.

Are you exhausted by perfectionism that worked for years and now feels like it's running your life? You used to keep everything moving (career, relationships, the version of yourself you'd worked hard to build) and now the strategies that got you here aren't built for who you've become or the life you're in. Together we work on reconnecting with what actually matters to you, untangling perfectionism from values, and making decisions in your career and life from a place that feels like you again.

From the outside, you may seem like you’re managing, perhaps even thriving. But internally, something feels off: a persistent sense of anxiety, emotional overwhelm, or a mind that doesn’t easily quiet. You may find yourself overthinking, feeling tense, or stuck in patterns that don’t fully make sense but continue to repeat. I specialize in helping people work through anxiety and the lasting impact of difficult past experiences so they can feel more at ease and more fully themselves. Our work will focus not only on what you’re experiencing now, but on understanding the deeper patterns that shape how you think, feel, and relate.

I feel very fortunate to do the job that I do and I approach therapy as a real collaboration between my clients and myself. I believe that people already have inner resources needed for exploration and healing and that therapy is a place where we can work together to discover and utilize those resources. I would describe my style as warm and interactive; I ask questions, I give and seek feedback, and I often use humor. I also focus on being present and open with you, listening with full, active attention in the moment. Overall, my hope is that when you come here, you’ll feel heard, supported, and like you can be yourself.

As a clinical psychologist, I work with people to find ways to create change in their lives. Clients bring a range of concerns, from developing a deeper understanding of themselves and their relationships, to adjusting to significant life events such as career change and retirement, parenting, divorce or marriage, or medical illness. While I may have access to experience and strategies that have helped others, I know it is my clients who are the experts on their own lives, and ultimately the ones who create their own change.

I believe that we all have the potential within ourselves to build a satisfying life, with physical and emotional health, fulfilling pursuits and loving relationships. There are many factors that can negatively affect our ability to do this, including developmental/biological factors, trauma, addictions, and life stressors. I help people who feel stuck in negative patterns and emotional pain to find their inner strengths and wisdom - the life force we all possess - and to guide and support them in achieving their goals. People find me warm, engaging, knowledgable, dedicated, compassionate, and playful.
