Hi! I am a family np (not psych certified) with a masters degree in mental health counseling and provide therapy/medications. I use a very client-centered approach. I have a strong belief that the mind and body are highly integrated and that physical and mental treatment are inseparable. For this reason, clients have the option of participating in a new model of treatment. This would include exercising during therapy sessions - brisk or slow walking on treadmills or Stairmaster at the client's comfort level. Of course, regular counseling and/or medication prescriptions are provided for those not interested in combining exercise.

Life is difficult at times. Creating change within oneself that is lasting and meaningful sometimes requires a little assistance. I provide evidence based psychotherapy that helps to restore the balance lost in everyday relationships. I specialize in grief and loss issues, resolving trauma, and navigating through life's transitions. Psychotherapy is always collaborative and client centered. Although life can be challenging at times, there are ways to renew purpose, reconnect, and re-establish a sense of trust. As such, my primary goal as an independent psychologist is to assist clients in achieving their very best life.

Filling your schedule to the brim for fear of panicked thoughts entering your mind. Any opening for idleness, even while driving or in the shower, offers space for the ‘what if’s’ and negative thoughts to swirl about endlessly. Feeling lost and out of control of your own life. You feel stuck yet untethered and free falling through life. Wanting to take back control of your thoughts and behaviors and not let anxiety have so much power over what you do or how you feel about yourself.

If you're feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or simply worn out from trying to hold everything together, you're not alone—and you don’t have to face it all on your own. Whether you're navigating anxiety, burnout, grief, identity questions, or just need a space to breathe and be, I’m here. Many of the people I work with are thoughtful, capable folks who carry a lot beneath the surface—emotionally, mentally, and sometimes spiritually. Maybe you’ve been holding it all for others, and now you’re quietly wondering: What about me? When do I get to feel okay?

As a fat-positive, queer therapist, I support my clients on their journey towards healing by incorporating a radical body liberation approach to therapy that is trauma-informed. I work with clients seeking to heal from oppressive narratives about their bodies, identities, and selves so they can live with more joy, pleasure, and connection. I have over 13 years of experience providing clinical care with diverse clients across the lifespan. Additionally, I have a particular interest in the intersection of body image concerns and religious trauma. I provide a warm, non-judgmental space for all individuals seeking healing.

I believe the therapist's role is to be authentic and compassionate, as well as an active participant in helping you to overcome whatever concern brings you to therapy. In addition to listening to what you are struggling with in the moment, I try to help you find ways to manage the distress and more fully engage in your life. I use a combination of traditional talk therapy and skill-building, primarily drawing from CBT, DBT, and ACT.

On the outside, you might look like you have it together. But inside, it feels like you’re just moving through the motions. You may find yourself stuck in constant thoughts about your body, food, or self-worth, or noticing that past experiences still shape how you see yourself in ways that are hard to break. I work with teens and adults—often women—who feel disconnected from themselves and are ready to change that. Clients who come to me are usually tired of the mental loop: overthinking, self-criticism, and never quite feeling “enough.” They’re not looking for another quick fix—they want something that actually lasts.

My practice is dedicated to the treatment of Obsessive Compulsive Disorders, Transport Agoraphobia with Panic, Fear of Flying and Phobias. I use traditional Cognitive and Behavioral Therapy (CBT) together with a new approach, known as Inferential-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (I-CBT), developed for the treatment of OCD specifically. ICBT focuses on a doubting process, where imagined, irrelevant or implausible stories cause you to distrust reality and direct evidence. ICBT is a remarkable "game-changer" in the treatment of OCD and related conditions!

You are not broken — but you may be feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or stuck. I’m Rachel Meena, a licensed clinical mental health counselor. I offer individual therapy to adults in person in Charlotte, NC and virtually to clients in NC, SC, MN, and MA. Many of my clients come to me feeling trapped in cycles of worry, self-criticism, intrusive thoughts, or compulsive behaviors that feel impossible to control. It’s exhausting to be on high alert all the time or to live with constant “what if” thinking. My primary modality is IFS but I also integrate mindfulness, EMDR for deeper trauma healing, and I-CBT for effective OCD treatment.

Attachment difficulties can leave people feeling empty, fearful, avoidant and confused. Some patients come in feeling overwhelmed by their emotions and may have intense and difficult relationships at home, school, or work. Others may have a harder time identifying emotions and may avoid conflict and feel unknown, unseen, or like a chameleon in their relationships. Some struggle with shame and/or painful memories and childhood trauma. I work best with individuals who may have had exposure to skill-based therapies like DBT and CBT, and are now looking beyond symptom management toward deep psychological understanding and change.

I work with young adults and adults experiencing depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, issues related to drugs or alcohol, and those recovering and healing from trauma. I have supported individuals in exploring their gender and sexuality and embrace non-binary, trans, and queer identities. I also specialize in perinatal, postpartum, and parental mental health. Many of my clients are mental health care providers themselves, who need clinical supervision or emotional support. My approach supports exploration of both the roots of emotions, behaviors, and patterns, while also talking about the here and now.

I believe our experiences shape us and that each client is unique. There is no "one size fits all" approach to treatment, which is why I draw on humanistic, relational, and feminist theory to inform my work. I am most experienced working with anxiety, athletic performance/injury, identity development, and eating disorders. I have primarily worked with young and emerging adults, athletes, and LGBTQ+ identifying folks in these areas.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
