I am a clinical psychologist, neuropsychologist and teacher, working with children of all ages in therapy and evaluations for over 25 years. If your child is having difficulties with any area learning, attention or social-emotional health or you have concerns about how to best understand them or help them grow, a good neuropsychological evaluation can be an invaluable source of insight and guidance. I believe that important as any specific test, are attentive, perceptive and empathetic observations of your child. I also believe in positive, collaborative communication and teamwork with those involved in their educational care.

Compassion is the most significant and integral component of therapy. My goal is to create a warm, respectful environment in which clients feel comfortable exploring their innermost feelings. Genuine and empathic in my approach, I believe in the strength of the individual to face life's challenges and to create new patterns of behavior and communication. I also believe clients must have compassion for themselves. Such compassion will lead to greater curiosity of the self and acceptance of one's experiences. This, in turn, enables the individual to see more clearly, gain new perspectives and find new solutions.

With adults I provide a supportive environment to work on practical strategies to improve your life. Our main focus is on your present and future, but if past feelings, behaviors and situations are still getting in your way we explore what happened and work on creating healthier patterns, using modalities including behavioral and psychodynamic therapies, and sometimes EMDR. With children and teens I teach skills and strategies, and periodically bring parents into sessions. I have expertise to share, but you are the expert on your child! We'll work together to build on your child's strengths to solve problems at home or school.

Many of my patients arrive with the frustrating sense that they’ve ‘tried everything.’ If you feel that way, it’s usually because your symptoms have been treated as separate parts rather than a connected system. I am a Clinical Health Psychologist specialized in Behavioral Medicine. I work with individuals, ranging from children to older adults, who are struggling with sleep, chronic pain, or coping with chronic illness. Rather than telling you to "just try harder" or "relax," I work with you to effectively recalibrate your system and restore your quality of life.

With a direct, authentic, and light-hearted approach, I form genuine connections with my clients, and work collaboratively to establish and achieve their goals. Through developing increased self-awareness and enhancing coping skills, my clients are better able to manage their symptoms. This process ultimately leads to a renewed sense of hope within our first initial meetings and improved daily functioning and overall life satisfaction thereafter.

I would like to to let my future clients know that for over thirty years I have offered compassionate, solution focused therapy to individuals, couples and families who are changing their lives. Many experienced trauma, a painful loss or difficulty in becoming true to themselves. For some, anxiety, depression or debilitating anger create roadblocks to happiness and connection. Others may be managing health issues, having problems with communication, intimacy, gender identification or sexual behavior concerns. It continues to be a privilege and an honor to be asked to walk with them through to happier, more fulfilled lives.

Often, feeling better requires CHANGE. It’s not easy but your happiness is worth it & so are you. But it must be at your pace. It’s most important that you feel safe. Personal issues can make us feel alone, ashamed or embarrassed. I can help you with that! I’m easy to talk to, with lots of personal experience that enhances my ability to relate. I offer a combination of online & in-person sessions. I work with individuals, couples, & groups. Many clients find it helpful to be part of a support group. Shared experiences of group members help foster an atmosphere of empathy, belonging and understanding.

I partner with individuals to create a positive and supportive environment to help them cope with life transitions, stressors and/or traumatic experiences. Exposure to trauma or distressing events can impact our whole selves including our thoughts, feelings, actions and identity. To help restore peace and promote healing, I use EMDR therapy. By using EMDR and mindfulness techniques, I understand and can help with the range of ways our bodies and minds react to difficult and distressing life events. This approach helps clients gently process their difficult experiences and build up resilience, hope and healing.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
