Life can present difficult feelings and experiences that can become overwhelming. Starting high school or college, graduating, moving to a new city, beginning a career, ending a relationship, or stepping into a new life stage can leave you feeling unsteady and navigating unexpected feelings. Therapy can be a way to manage these complicated feelings of sadness, anger, anxiety or just a general feeling of “stuckness”. Everyone has the ability to unlock their potential and move forward into their next phase of life.

None of us are meant to meet the many challenges of life alone. Whether your relationships are stuck in certain patterns, anxiety has kept your world feeling small, or grief & anger are making the joy hard to find - I am here to accompany you in the work of healing, self-exploration, & deeper embodiment. As a practicing relationship & sex therapist, I specialize in working with those seeking gender-affirming care, navigating out of control sexual behaviors, or generally wanting to engage more with their sexuality, as well as folks in partnership desiring a change in the way they relate to intimacy & communication.

Life can get pretty intense. We all have those moments when we feel trapped by our emotions, worries, or past struggles. Maybe you have a vision of where you want to be but aren't sure how to get there. Or perhaps you know something needs to change, but the way forward seems murky. It’s easy to get overwhelmed by expectations and ‘should-haves,’ leaving us feeling inadequate and full of self-doubt. These thoughts can really hit our self-esteem, disrupt our sleep, and strain our relationships.

My style is compassionate, talkative, and down-to-earth. We'll start by clarifying the feelings, thoughts, and behaviors that are troubling you. Then, I'll help you discover the story you unconsciously believe about your life, and how it steers your choices. Then, we build up the story you prefer, and you begin acting on it.

Many folks find that even after seeing a therapist, they continue to experience problems such as difficulty sleeping, irritable bowel, hypervigilance, being easily startled, being very sensitive, and many other body-based reactions. They may be discouraged, and feel that they simply have to live with these problems. My practice specializes in working with individuals not simply to achieve symptom remission, but to achieve wellness. I actively collaborate with my patients to look at the root causes of anxiety, depression and other problems. In resolving these, I help folks find more balance and peace in their lives.

Sometimes we need to talk with someone who can truly hear us in order to navigate difficulties and life transitions. I will listen closely to what is troubling you, as well as to what is most important to you. I am most influenced by practices of narrative therapy, mindfulness, and acceptance and commitment therapy, all of which assist with distancing oneself from unhelpful narratives, thoughts, and feelings, and with living a value driven life. I have specialized interest in assisting with relational issues and trauma, life changes, women’s and perinatal issues, depression, anxiety, grief/loss, and behavioral/habitual changes.

You sense that more is possible for your life and you are ready to address the parts inside that want to heal. You are motivated to prioritize your mental and emotional wellbeing. I can help you address the inner blocks that are getting in your way. I am an IFS (Internal Family Systems) Level 2 trained therapist and I offer a somatic/body-centered approach. IFS is a non-pathologizing modality. Sometimes, traditional talk therapy does not bring deep healing, noticeable growth, or lasting change. Please see my website (heartmindhealing dot net) for more details about what I offer. My practice is full.

Are you struggling with low self-esteem, self-criticism, or feeling disconnected from your authentic self? Maybe you've experienced emotional abuse in the past, and now find it hard to trust your own feelings. I specialize in working with adults navigating these challenges. If you're ready to untangle old patterns and move towards more intimacy with yourself and others, I would be honored to do that work along side you. I work best with creative individuals who see the value in sometimes setting aside their story to go a little deeper into what the body is directly expressing.

Update Fall 2025: I am currently offering retreats for women 50 yrs +. Next one is 2/13/26 - 2/16/26 in the Hudson Valley. Look up "Hutton Brickyards" with my name "Debra Krumholz" and consider joining us for "Creating a Meaningful Third Act". Most of us decide to enter into therapy because we are in pain and we want to find ways to end the pain. We feel stuck, without choices. While we are drawn to change and growth, it can also be very scary. As your therapist, I see it as my job to help you find the courage to see yourself clearly, to harness your own strength and resources, and to discover your own answers.

Life transitions—whether it’s a job change, burnout, loss, divorce, or simply the growing sense that something needs to shift—can leave you questioning everything. Some of my clients come to therapy because they feel disconnected from their purpose, overwhelmed by stress, or are simply ready for something different. Others may be healing from trauma, anxiety, dealing with depression, or are simply ready for something different.

Welcome to my practice. If you're an adult navigating the complexities of PTSD, C-PTSD, or trauma-related dissociation, you may find yourself facing a range of challenges that affect your daily life. You might be struggling with emotional distress, anxiety, persistent (emotional) flashbacks, nightmares, dissociation, and intrusive thoughts that disrupt your tranquility. It's common to experience emotional numbness or heightened emotional reactions, making maintaining relationships and building trust complex. Additionally, you may encounter physical symptoms like tension, pain, or fatigue.

My specialties include health psychology, relationship issues, depression, anxiety and addictions. I run support groups for MS and Huntington's disease as part of my practice. I have a pragmatic approach to treatment in terms of adapting interventions to meet the needs of the individual. I am interested in mindfulness and its impact on well being. There are so many opportunities to bring about positive change by altering how we relate to both present circumstances and past experience.
