It is with this holistic approach I work with general mental health concerns including mood dysregulation, depression and anxiety, neurobehavioral and cognitive conditions, post trauma injuries, thought disorders and personality influences.
Seeking services for mental health support is an important decision. My purpose in doing this work of psychiatry is to provide clarity and understanding of symptoms that interrupt function and compromise quality of life. It is with this purpose that we, together, devise strategies for raising stress tolerance, setting attainable goals and reaching them. Since 1990 I have been working in health care, from holistic beginnings in massage therapy and nutrition, to addiction medicine, family medicine and migrant health, and now psychiatry and behavioral medicine. I am a Psychiatric Physician Associate.

A few disorders and populations I really enjoy working with are depression, anxiety, trauma, women, veterans, toxic relationship recovery, childhood trauma, and more.
Let's face it; life can be hard sometimes. Maybe you don't have the right people in your life to offer you a safe space to express yourself. Sometimes you need medication to help with the lows of life, deal with depression, stress, or whatever else that is going on preventing you from thriving. You want a non-judgmental space where you can talk about anything and everything. I often hear from my clients that it's too exhausting to re-tell their story to someone else if their therapist suggests a psychiatrist or vice versa. I do both; you won't have to find someone else to share with to get the care you need.

I am currently accepting new clients. Most problems have a solution, most illnesses are treatable. Change begins with a first step toward doing things differently than you have done them before. I believe the purpose of therapy is ultimately not to be in therapy but to aquire new skills to support positive change. I am not a therapist who will sit back quietly, nod and give you an occassional 'Uh-huh'. I have Master's degrees in both Counseling and Nursing. I work in the ER at Harborview, at my office practice, and with the psychiatric needs of older adults. I come from an integrative medicine perspective when I prescribe med.s

Working with individuals challenged by mental health and substance use disorders is a passion of mine, and it truly is a privilege. Psychiatric problems are actually very common, but unfortunately that does not mean that they are easy to discuss with others, or to seek professional help to address. I recognize that simply acknowledging that we are having a problem can be an enormous hurdle to overcome. My hope is that I can provide an atmosphere which is open and non-judgmental, and allows individuals whom I work with to share.

Congratulations on your steps to mental health! It requires courage to talk to someone about mental health; it also shows how serious you are about making your life better and making the lives of those who love you better. Your mental health doesn’t just affect you - it affects everyone around you – your family, your partner, your co-workers and your friends. My goal is to make sure that each of my patients is heard; I want to work with you to identify what your mental health goals are, and partner with you to achieve your goals.

What is the goal of therapy for depression?
Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.
What happens in therapy for depression?
Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.
What therapy types help with depression?
Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.
Can therapy for depression be done online?
Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.
How effective is therapy for depression?
Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
