I am a psychiatrist specializing in the treatment of adults and adolescents with addictions, mood disorders, personality disorders, ADHD, anxiety, and psychosis. I offer both medication management and psychotherapy. My approach to medications is a conservative one: I use medications (including Suboxone) only when patients have a full understanding of their risks and benefits, and I am willing to help patients taper or discontinue medications that provide little benefit, or which cause harm. At all times, I am eager to collaborate with other providers (therapists, counselors, alternative medicine specialists) to provide the optimal care for my patients.

My ideal client could be a child, adolescent or an adult that wants and needs to get psychiatric care. I am an open-minded and holistic psychiatrist who takes the whole person into account when I am treating him/her. I practice the biopsychosocial model and I also understand that not all treatment modalities work for all people. I tailor treatment goals and strategies for each individual person. I am also a big believer in combining diet, exercise, acupuncture, reiki, massage, physical therapy, psychotherapy, hypnotherapy, psychoeducation, groups into the treatment plan and focusing on wellness as well.

I am a board certified psychiatrist offering diagnostic evaluation and treatment in psychotherapy, medication-assisted psychotherapy, and medication management. After completing training at Duke University Medical Center, I engaged in further studies at San Francisco Center for Psychoanalysis and at California Institute for Integral Studies. I have facility in multiple modalities and am engaged in discovering which one is most effective for you. I am especially interested in the experiences of first and second generation Americans, intergenerational trauma, and integration of non-ordinary states of consciousness.

Dr. Tara Valenzuela DNP, PMHNP-BC. is a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. She treats mental health across the lifespan. Her treatments are healing-centered, education-forward, person-focused. This involves customized strategies that may begin with therapy and medication, and can involve holistic planning including nutrition and activity to treat the whole person. She aligns with the idea that Nursing is the facilitation of healing, and works to provide intervention, education, and advocacy. Dr. Tara Valenzuela believes psychiatric treatment allows a life worth living to be lived.

I am a Bay Area native thrilled to be living in Berkeley (where I attended college) after being in the South Bay for years. I am passionate about fixing broken systems of care, in using technology as a resource for mental health treatment, and keeping a positive attitude for my patients and their families. In my experience as a physician and psychiatrist all diseases, whether mental or physical, are a product of ancestral or generational trauma, which we have to resolve in this life. The symptoms and signs of disease tend to be entangled with our Unconscious Mind. We often times end up doing things, we are not aware of as a unresolved coping mechanism of trauma, like our family has done for ages. I am looking for clients who wish to address the deeper psychological conflicts that underlie their disease and who are ready to transform and let go of the past.

My goal when I meet a new patient is to understand what they are going through and what has affected their life. If I work with you or your family member I will try and understand your situation and history and will get a sense of how to shape modalities of therapy to help you and/or your family member to overcome the problems. I see a range of ages from children and adolescents to adults. Although every individual problem is unique, I have expertise in Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) in children and adults, Depression, Bipolar Disorder, Anxiety, and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.
