I am currently accepting new patients for telehealth appointments only. I am a board-certified psychiatrist who works with adults. I have expertise in working with a variety of mental health conditions: depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety, panic disorder, ADHD, OCD, schizophrenia and others. Although I work primarily to evaluate and treat with medication as needed, I have deep respect for the benefits of psychotherapy. I trained mostly at St. Louis University and had expert teaching in providing high quality medication management and psychotherapy.

We all want the same qualities in our doctor, summed up as “the four A’s:” Able, Available, Approachable, and Affordable. For the past three decades I’ve tried to earn “all A’s” from my patients; please go to my website, www.mindbrainpsychiatry.com, and see for yourself, if you’re seeking help for depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, or addictions.

I enjoy teaching and helping people understand how their bodies work, and how the medications work to help them feel better, thus empowering clients with the knowledge to make informed decisions. I also have extensive experience in the realm of substance abuse. My experience has helped me learn how to target the receptors that clients were self-medicating, in a non-habit-forming way, thereby helping to balance their chemistry, while helping them come to terms with their narrative, and ultimately learning to live their best life. I do not prescribe controlled substances.

I am a psychiatrist who does psychotherapy and will only use medication if necessary. I believe psychotherapy is an essential part of treatment that will minimize the use of medications. Although I work with relationship difficulties, it is only on an individual basis and not as a couples counselor.

Prior to training as a psychiatric nurse practitioner, I studied existential phenomenological psychotherapy with a focus on psychotherapeutic applications. I worked as a therapist for a period of time applying this model. This has given me an appreciation and respect for the uniqueness of every person. I believe this is blends well with the application of psychiatric science, which is our guiding framework but can also be limiting, stigmatizing, and over-generalizing. My goal is to help patients live their best lives.

Optimal clients don't necessarily pursue treatment with the goal of becoming 'ideal.' Instead, they seek assistance in navigating their personal life journey. When both the clinician and the client collaborate to enhance the client's overall quality of life and environment, we can achieve the best possible outcomes for the client.

In today's hustle and bustle society, it is easy to overlook one's own needs and well-being. Mental health symptoms can impair our capacity to function at maximum potential. As a psychiatrist, psychotherapist, and physician, I strive to understand each patient as an individual, with a unique background, set of priorities, and co-occurring psychiatric and medical conditions. I work collaboratively with my patients in designing a personalized treatment plan to effectively target symptoms and reduce suffering. Treatment modalities offered include use of psychotropic medication, psychotherapy, and combined medication and therapy.

Life is far from perfect. Everyone experiences loss, unforeseen change, and anxiety provoking stress. When these stresses become so powerful that they interfere with our work, self-care, or relationships, it is important to remember that we are not alone and help is available. With bravery, you can seek help and begin to heal. My goal is to help those who are facing these difficulties. I received my psychiatric training at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Adult Psychiatry. With this experience, I am able to diagnose and treat a broad range of psychiatric illnesses, including but not limited to depression, anxiety, and eating disorders.

Male Psychiatrists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with therapists of a specific gender. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
