Dr. Bess graduated from Swarthmore College and University of Michigan Medical School, completed residency at UM, including a year as a chief resident, then joined the psychiatry faculty at UM, working on the Inpatient, Consultation-Liaison and ECT teams. In addition to medication management, I use an Internal Family Systems (IFS) lens to approach healing. IFS is a non-pathologizing, transformative, and evidence-based psychotherapy that guides individuals toward access and love of their inner protective and wounded parts. This includes exploration of thoughts, feelings, sensations, and imagery. In addition to IFS, I draw from narrative therapy and other somatically oriented approaches including mindfulness and Vipassana meditation, and I am fascinated by the transformation that can occur when we become curious about the body’s wisdom.
