I am most experienced with treating psychiatric concerns of a young adult population but I consult with and treat adults of all ages. I have broad experience treating depression, anxiety, OCD, ADHD, bipolar disorder, PTSD, and eating disorder. I enjoy educating clients who may be new to medication treatment and have reservations about it. I work best with clients who are looking to incorporate medication treatment with other therapeutic options such as psychotherapy, lifestyle change, exercise, and mindfulness -based approaches. Though I do not offer specific treatment for addictions, I address self-medication issues and substance abuse issues with all clients.

Nutrition, movement, restoration, and mindfulness are significant components alongside traditional treatment.
Health is not just the absence of illness, it is the ability to be at peace, pursue your goals, and live according to your values. Whether you have a diagnosed mental illness, are struggling with day-to-day functioning, or are suffering from a variety of manifestations of psychic pain, it is important to seek help and explore your experience, which I am happy and humbled to assist with.

I feel that achieving health and happiness comes by addressing many aspects of life-mind, body, spirituality, social connectedness, etc. This holistic approach recognizes that we all have an inherent ability to achieve health and that the focus of treatment should be on addressing barriers to this vs. treating or "curing" a disease. None of my patients have been in a textbook. Diagnoses should be used as a general guide for treatment, but that treatment should be customized for each individual person by taking into account the ways in which they do not fit the "textbook diagnosis".

I specialize in comprehensive treatment of mood disorders such as depression, anxiety, substance abuse and PTSD that have been poorly responsive to other trials of treatment. After developing a process to treat people with lifelong, difficult to treat addiction, I created www.selfrecovery.org as a way to help people access good help from anywhere. As a physician I can prescribe medication, but I always include therapy to best identify and heal the actual source of the symptoms. I will take the time to review your past treatment, and enjoy improving on remaining gaps to help you reach your potential.

Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Psychiatrists

How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.

When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behavior through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.

What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviors and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.

Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioral habits.

About Psychiatrists, meds and Psychiatric Nurses.

A Psychiatrist in Austin is a qualified medical doctor who specializes in treating mental health issues and diagnosable disorders.

Sometimes, Psychiatrists form part of a clinical team in which they will diagnose and prescribe, while psychologists or therapists provide the client's psychotherapy.

As part of a clinical assessment, Psychiatrists may conduct physical examinations, take blood tests, and order and interpret lab tests and brain image scans, such as CT scans, CAT Scans, and MRIs.

The field of psychiatry in Austin has many sub-specialties, including pediatric psychiatry. Those who work with the elderly are called geriatric psychiatrists.

Other related sub-specialties include cognition psychiatry, addiction psychiatry, psychosomatic, forensic, reproductive medicine specialties, psychopharmacology , psychiatric genetics, neuroimaging, and clinical neurophysiology.

Psychiatric nurse practitioners in Austin, or mental health nurse practitioners, generally have an MS degree in nursing (MSN) and a number of years of training to become certified.
