Specializations: Children (including very young children with behavioral or developmental disorders), adolescents, college students, and women who are pregnant or postpartum (including while breastfeeding).
My primary philosophy is that you are the expert on yourself (or your child) and your personal journey to wellness. I will discuss your priorities and goals and then give my professional recommendations. We will then work together on how that to best apply a treatment plan to your circumstances. I am your consultant (as the kids would say), NOT your boss."

I work with women who are currently pregnant, or postpartum, as well as women with pre-menstrual dysphoric disorder.
My primary goal is to create an environment where you feel safe, accepted, and understood. I am an adult psychiatrist offering treatment with both medications and psychotherapy. Medications can be helpful, but medicine is never the sole answer to our problems. As a psychiatrist who also does psychotherapy, I will work collaboratively with you to develop a treatment plan which includes the role of physical activity, relationships, nutrition and work/life balance. I treat adults with depression, anxiety disorders (including generalized anxiety, panic disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder), mood disorders, and ADHD.

I help busy men and women reduce their anxiety, depression, & executive dysfunction to regain their vitality by using an integrative/functional medicine approach. The ideal client is deeply committed & motivated to feeling mentally and physically better, with or without psychiatric medications. They want to get rid of fatigue, poor sleep, brain fog, improve cognition & overall wellness. They also desire evidence based information to help guide their treatment while receiving more 1:1 attention. The ideal client has typically tried the traditional mental health route & they want better results, without interrupting their busy lives.

Accepting new adult patients (18+) for virtual and in person visits. Request a new patient appointment online at www.AmyWaltonMD.com. I have been a board certified psychiatrist in Austin since 2007. After 13 years treating people in crisis at Seton Shoal Creek Hospital, I am acutely aware that the lack of mental health providers in Central Texas contributes in unnecessary delays in receiving high quality mental health treatment and can lead to psychiatric crisis and hospitalization. I opened my private practice to help bridge that gap.

It is my intention with this practice to offer a safe space to all individuals, with a special interest in my Latinx community and other members of the BIPOC community. Seeking help for your emotional health can be an intimidating and vulnerable process, and for people from marginalized communities, the process can be even more daunting. Many of us are rightfully skeptical of a broken system influenced by prejudice, racism, implicit bias or outright bigotry. Add to that the heavy stigma around mental health that exists within many of our own communities and families and asking for help can feel impossible.

As a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner, I provide compassionate, up-to-date mental health care to my clients. This can range from prescribing medication, providing information about how to improve sleep or nutrition, or simply helping clients to understand how mental health issues happen, how they can affect our lives, and what options for treatment exist. Trauma, anxiety and depression (unipolar or bipolar) and hormonal issues (PMDD, menopause) are areas of specialty for me, as I have had significant experience treating these issues. Currently, I can see clients age 17 and over.

As a board certified psychiatric nurse practitioner, I can provide high quality, affordable mental health care for your child without a long wait. My approach to care is collaborative, which means that you will ALWAYS have an active voice in the treatment. Not all mental health concerns require medication, of course, but if we do decide that medication may be helpful, my philosophy is always to "start LOW and go SLOW." My goal is to help your child achieve full remission of symptoms and an optimal level of functioning with as little medication as possible.

Female Psychiatrists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.

About Psychiatrists, meds and Psychiatric Nurses.

A Psychiatrist in Austin is a qualified medical doctor who specializes in treating mental health issues and diagnosable disorders.

Austin Psychiatrists differ from other mental health professionals in that they may prescribe medication as well as practice psychotherapy in treatment. Sometimes, Psychiatrists form part of a clinical team in which they will diagnose and prescribe, while psychologists or therapists provide the client's psychotherapy.

As part of a clinical assessment, Psychiatrists may conduct physical examinations, take blood tests, and order and interpret lab tests and brain image scans, such as CT scans, CAT Scans, and MRIs.

The field of psychiatry in Austin has many sub-specialties, including pediatric psychiatry. Those who work with the elderly are called geriatric psychiatrists.

Other related sub-specialties include cognition psychiatry, addiction psychiatry, psychosomatic, forensic, reproductive medicine specialties, psychopharmacology , psychiatric genetics, neuroimaging, and clinical neurophysiology.

Psychiatric nurse practitioners in Austin, or mental health nurse practitioners, generally have an MS degree in nursing (MSN) and a number of years of training to become certified. Psychiatric nurse practitioners are able to assess and diagnose mental health conditions and prescribe medication. Austin Psychiatric nurse practitioners also have training that enables them to include psychotherapy with treatment.
