She is a Professor of Psychiatry at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas and is in the private practice of adult and child psychiatry. She graduated from Rice University, University of Texas Medical School in Houston and completed residencies in adult and child psychiatry at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. Dr. Mao is board-certified in child, adolescent, and adult psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.

After completing a fellowship the National Institutes for Health, I was recruited to Baylor College of Medicine where I became a tenured professor. I have conducted original research into new treatments, lectured and helped with our national research agenda. I have worked in biomedicine for 25 years. I started as a laboratory scientist then moved from the experimental to the practical when I transitioned to Registered Nurse on a stroke unit. My primary interest has always been the brain. After seeing the effects of brain chemistry and structure (and disruptions of both) on mood and mental health, I became a PMHNP.
