It's not easy to walk into an office and speak to a stranger about your most personal struggles with the hope that they might actually help you. This requires trust that the therapist knows what they are doing and a sense of safety that they actually like and care about you. Therapy is first about building a trusting relationship, and then about using the best available therapeutic approaches to heIp you get relief from pain, stress, and conflicts.

REGARDING COVID 19: We have to find ways to cope without lots of the things we normally rely on (going out with friends, going to the gym, 12-step meetings, religious services, etc.). Tele-therapy can really help you to cope while you’re social-distancing in your home. If you don’t have insurance, we can discuss a reasonable fee you can afford, based on a sliding scale.

Finding the right fit with a therapist is so important. In order to get the most out of therapy, it is crucial that the therapist/patient relationship be empathic, comfortable and trusting. I work with college age and adult individuals, struggling with anxiety, panic disorder, depression, life transitions, pre and postpartum, medical/pain issues, coping with stress and relationship issues. I have been a therapist for 20 years, and feel confident that you can overcome barriers that are affecting you emotionally, psychologically and physically. I strive to make you feel more comfortable in your life.

If you are searching for a therapist, that probably means that something is not working for you in your life right now. My goal is to provide a safe, warm environment for you to explore all of the reasons that you made the decision to seek help, and then to assist you in formulating your own goals. After conducting a thorough assessment, I will be a thoughtful listener, and also an active participant in the subsequent exploration. While therapy can be challenging, I work hard to make you feel understood, and to help generate potential solutions.

Each of us must embark on a journey with grief and loss. Whether we have a terminal or life limiting diagnosis, have experienced trauma or struggle with the existential pain of human existence, we all must make peace with these challenging feelings. Many are struggling with the very real distress in today’s world, trying to make sense and move forward in their lives while basic human values are being questioned. How we live brings the utmost meaning to our lives. It enables us to turn pain into growth experiences. Addressing our sorrow and grief in new and non linear ways, creates opportunities for deep and sustainable healing.

It is inevitable that our lives are consumed with daily challenges and obstacles. For each of us, our ability to manage those challenges differs; or, we settle and adapt much to the detriment of our emotional wellbeing and feeling as though there is no end in sight. Therapy provides an opportunity to examine those challenges and reframe them into a new, positive perspective. When we are able to see our way through and discover solutions to those problems from a position of strength, it can take on a whole new meaning.

I'm not a typical therapist; if I ask you to be vulnerable, so should I. I'm John, and I am diagnosed with bipolar 2, learning disabilities, trauma, and a career change. This has given me the ability to understand people and provide a similar safe space that I was given to grow. Honesty is key to growth, and I learned that life sucks sometimes and that it's okay to feel that. If you wear a mask to cover your true self, you're preventing happiness, love, and the development of resilience. Let me empower you to find your true self and navigate challenges effectively.

As a Cuban-American, I am able to relate to and understand many Hispanic/Latino cultural norms. Furthermore, I have years of experience counseling individuals in the Black and Latino Community. I have firsthand experience with different mental health disorders as it has hit close to home, and I know how devastating it can be to those suffering and to the family. This is but one of the reasons I am passionate about therapy and its benefits. My strengths in counseling include a nonjudgmental approach that leads to notable progress and appropriate solutions for many different presenting problems.

Accepting New Clients! Are you pregnant but not feeling like yourself? Or a new mom who feels like you are failing in the parenting business? Feel like you get upset with your partner for what seems to be “small things"? Perhaps you are trying desperately to get pregnant only to be faced with infertility or recurring miscarriages. Depression in women is quite common, we just don’t go around talking about it. We put on a happy face and do what we feel is expected of us. But statistics tell us that approximately 20% of women experience depression or anxiety while pregnant or just after having a baby.

The human experience can be quite complex however if we are able to take moments of time to acknowledge where we are emotionally and develop a sense of awareness, we can find ourselves accepting where life often takes us. As your therapist, it is my goal to provide a safe nourishing environment to help you navigate through your personal journey. It is essential that we are able to develop and maintain an enriching relationship that strengthens you with confidence to meet your personal challenges.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
