Not accepting new clients
I have practiced Child, Adolescent and Adult Psychiatry in Mount Pleasant for over 19 years, and in Murrell's Inlet, SC for two years. I offer experienced, confidential and solution-focused treatment for all ages. In every session I do both talk therapy and (when indicated) medication management. The success of my practice is based on my taking the time to really know each patient and his/her needs and to develop mutual trust with each patient.

I was fortunate to grow up in Charleston where my family has lived for many generations. I spent my childhood playing on Sullivan's Island and sailing at my grandparents' House on Wadmalaw Island. I attended medical school at the university of Colorado and completed psychiatry residency at Dartmouth. I emphasize a holistic, patient focused treatment built on a foundation of a strong doctor-patient alliance. In 2014 I decided to return home to my family in Charleston. I was in a clinical leadership position downtown at the VA until joining Mt. Pleasant Psychiatry in 2017.

When times are tough, or when you're having issues, it's hard to find things to find pride in. The courage to seek help is something to take pride in, and I commend you for that. As a provider, my skill set lends itself towards being very good at diagnosing your issue, then explaining it well, and working with you in finding the right treatment. I generally find that a combination of medication and counseling works best. I focus on adult patients of any age, and I am board certified in psychiatry.

Hello; I’m Sean. I’m a board certified psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner. Ever since I can remember I have wanted to help people with mental health conditions. I’m a teacher at heart as I was a golf instructor for the first part of my adult life, and I enjoy educating my patients on why certain interventions and suggestions would give each patient the greatest chance to succeed. I implement evidence-based practice with all my patients, but this is not limited to pharmological interventions.

My name is Casey Kundert and I’m a board-certified psychiatric nurse practitioner, at Centerway Behavioral Health. I’m originally from Illinois and have lived in Charleston for fifteen years and love it here. While completing the Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner master’s program at the University of South Carolina, I worked as a charge nurse on the general adult unit at MUSC’s Institute of Psychiatry. Through my education and experience, I’ve seen a very diverse range of mental illness, how it progresses, and the significant benefits of treatment over time.

Dissociative Disorders (DID) Psychiatrists

How does therapy for dissociative disorders work?

Dissociation may be triggered by stress or other upsetting circumstances, and therapy can address the traumatic events at the core of an individual’s dissociation. Understanding why a person may dissociate can help the therapist and the individual come up with alternative methods of coping. A person with a dissociative disorder may get stuck on negative thinking, for example, and treatment like Cognitive behavioral therapy is a gold standard for breaking such thinking. And dialectical behavior therapy, for example, can help a person manage their anguish through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for dissociative disorders?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, schema therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful memories and past traumas. These therapies work to integrate an individual's different identities into one person.

Are there specific medications for dissociation?

There are no specific medications prescribed for dissociative disorders. However, psychosis, depression, anxiety, and/or panic often co-occur in dissociative disorders. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for any accompanying symptom—which may include antipsychotics like aripiprazole, antidepressants like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or anti-anxiety drugs like benzodiazepines.

How often and how long are therapy sessions?

Like any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. There are still other patients, especially those who have co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, who may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months.
