I do not have an "ideal client." The ideal I strive for is to meet each person where they are and come to know who they are as a person first, in the process of trying to help them find some understanding around possible diagnoses and treatment interventions. In today's transactional healthcare world, the doctor-patient relationship has been sidelined in its role as the core medium by which any healing and/or understanding can happen. My goal every day of my practice is to restore the centrality and valuation of that relationship. Only from there can an "ideal client" feel comfortable enough to share their vulnerabilities.
I am a psychiatrist and Diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. I completed my residency at the University of Pennsylvania, where I was trained equally in the importance of psychotherapeutic (non-medication) values as in the potential relief that modern neuropsychiatric research and biological interventions offer.
I care about who you are, beyond but certainly including your suffering. There is no "magic pill," which may be both the disappointment and the relief. BUT there are pharmaceutical interventions that, when well-selected, can make a big difference for a lot of people...IF contained within a professional relationship of trust and caring.
