About
Perhaps a relationship or a job or parenting isn’t going well, or you just feel bad (or angry, or frightened). I try to be of use to people who are in pain. How do I try to help? By having open and honest conversations, good talks. It’s not so easy to do that – we keep our guards up for compelling reasons, because of our experiences of being hurt and used and misunderstood in the past. Often it seems obvious what we need to do, and yet impossible to do it. In therapy we wrestle with the bind.
Our past experiences shape us, and sometimes they take their toll. But it’s a great misunderstanding about therapy that the work is all about rummaging through the attics of our past. We’re only interested in the past as it is alive and kicking in the present.
Therapy puts in question the road maps we’ve followed without hesitation and taken as the only way to go. We’ll try to do that, and we’ll pay attention to whether our therapy is working. For more on how I think about treatment, check out my website, robertwiner.com.
