Children and adolescents today face challenges that were unknown to previous generations. Even before COVID, they were faced with a massive increase in the information available to young minds, the difficult environment of social media, the rise of cyberbullying and the reduction in time spent face to face with their peers.
There is often a stigma associated with seeking help for mental health concerns. I am less concerned with applying a label than I am with helping patients thrive. Effectively treating mental illness involves incorporating many different factors into a comprehensive treatment plan tailored to each individual.
I recently left a local Children’s Hospital so that I can see patients in an outpatient setting full-time. Prior to this, I worked with acutely ill patients in crisis on the inpatient units. That experience was very rewarding, but I was limited to working with these patients for only a week at a time while they were in the hospital.
I mainly work with children and adolescents, believing that they have unique needs. I devote all of my continuing education to stay current with the latest evidence for this population. Although I only accept new patients aged 3-24 years old, continuing to work with those same patients as they move into adulthood is one of the most rewarding parts of my job.
