I would say the most important aspect I focus on has to do with relationship. Our relationship to others (family, friends, co-workers) as well as our relationship to our thoughts, emotions, and our own physical body. I think we are all working on our relationships and they are a big source of our emotional life and self-image and self-esteem. A lot has been written (and will continue to be written) about approaches to "psychotherapy". Going on 30 years in the field of mental health, I have consistently been drawn to the basics of being a good listener so that whoever I'm with knows their story is what matters to me in the moment.
That's a good start to any relationship whether it is with a child, an adult, or even the family pet. Being fully attentive in the moment can reveal how to work well with someone in any relationship including a therapeutic relationship. We all have a need to be understood in life and it matters when someone makes the effort and actually tries to "get" us.
I work with individuals as well as couples in my practice currently. I certainly work with a wide spectrum of problems ranging from mood and anxiety issues, interpersonal problems, problems with chemical and behavioral "addictions", obsessive thoughts that lead to compulsive behaviors - including eating disorders and a broad scope of other related issues.
