At LJS Psychiatry, all providers are experienced in psychoanalytic therapy and specialized in prescribing psychiatric medications.
LJS Psychiatry is a unique psychiatry practice that provides truly holistic psychiatric care. LJS Psychiatry providers are psychotherapists who can prescribe medications, when needed, in the context of individual psychotherapy. That means you no longer need to see one person for psychotherapy and another for medication treatment. Instead, we provide genuine whole person care that proves to be highly effective. When you're navigating trauma, depression, anxiety, or identity challenges, you need a space where you are met with genuine empathy, active curiosity, and a willingness to encourage honest self-examination.

I serve on the faculties of Jefferson Medical College (now Sidney Kimmel Medical College) and the Psychoanalytic Center of Philadelphia.
I regard empathy, responsiveness, and respect for the patient as core therapeutic values. While I tailor treatment to the individual, as a psychoanalyst I place special importance on gaining insight about unconscious contributors to current difficulties. I also appreciate the importance of clarifying and resolving here-and-now problems. When appropriate I prescribe medications or work short-term. My style is collaborative rather than authoritarian. For many years I have taught psychotherapy and psychoanalysis to trainees in these fields. I also teach professional ethics. I have published in the major journals in my field and am a training and supervising psychoanalyst.

Engaging in the journey of psychotherapy can feel formidable, but I believe that it can also be transformative, freeing, and full of surprises. I specialize in psychoanalytic or psychodynamic psychotherapy, where I work closely with you to explore unconscious parts of the self and patterns of being with others. This process can lead not only to relief from symptoms, but also achieve sustained, deeper changes. This often looks like the following: increased curiosity and creativity, a sense of wellbeing, improved satisfaction in relationships, pursuing life goals with more vigor and conviction.

Specifically, I use psychoanalytic psychotherapy, insight oriented psychotherapy, supportive and cognitive behavioral therapy and psychoanalysis.
Life is often difficult. Sometimes these difficulties can be seen, understood and worked on towards a constructive and rewarding conclusion. Sometimes they are obscure, complicated, and entangled leaving a person to feel lost, abandoned, overwhelmed, helpless and powerless. Relationships, work challenges, personal self understanding, inner thoughts, feelings, goals, dreams and fears are all situations where these difficulties can play out. Talk therapy works as the therapist and the patient engage in active listening which is often difficult to do in non-professional social situations.

Life is full of distractions, the expected and unexpected. Activities of daily living keep us from what we treasure most. These distractions cause problems in our relationships, at home, work, school and socially, disrupting the harmony between our inner self and the world around us.
Talk therapy alone works in most situations. Talk treatments I use include psychoanalytic psychotherapy, insight oriented psychotherapy, supportive therapy and psychoanalysis.
In some circumstances, the addition of medication is recommended and discussed.

People seek treatment for many reasons. Sometimes the source of pain is clear, as in a traumatic event or a painful loss. Just as often, there may be symptoms that are harder to pinpoint and understand. It could be that you are struggling with emotional pain due to a difficult relationship or aren't sure how to move forward in life. Psychotherapy can be brief and support you in a difficult time; or it can help you develop a deeper understanding of who you are and what you want out of life. My approach is psychodynamic: I believe that our past relationships and attachments impact how we live life in the present.

I work with children, adolescents and adults who are looking for help to feel better about themselves and their lives. As a psychoanalyst with many years of experience working with all ages, I work with people to discover the causes of their distress. We can then work together to find new ways that they can understand the underlying problems and new ways to deal with them. I am also a psychiatrist with child, adolescent and adult training. While my primary focus is psychotherapy, I am also able to discuss possible needs for medication.

Often the tribulations and traumas of life can expose our personal vulnerabilities, causing us to feel overwhelmed, unhappy in our relationships, and dissatisfied with our lives. Yet human beings are innately resilient and with the right support and guidance, we can not only diminish our suffering but cultivate greater understanding, deeper relationships, and wisdom. My aim is to use my advanced training in existential philosophy, positive psychology, and psychoanalysis to work collaboratively and compassionately with clients to help them feel better, develop greater insight, and develop greater sense of meaning in life.

Do you feel worried, stressed, or stuck by a particular issue or in general? Have you noticed a pattern of experiences in life that you'd like help with? Does it affect your work or relationships? Have you had other treatments that have left you feeling that some underlying issue has not been fully addressed? Empathic and kind listening & exploration, alongside personal experience & growth may be necessary. My patients tend to be intelligent & sensitive, but come in struggling or unhappy in their lives. They have become aware of the same issues presenting over & over again.

Does psychoanalytic therapy work?
Psychoanalytic therapy derives from the work of Sigmund Freud. In this type of therapy, discovering buried thoughts and emotions from the unconscious will help a person work through their difficulties and negative behaviors. Research shows that psychoanalytic therapy can be highly effective, with patients reporting improvement in mood, quality of life, and overall well-being.
How long are people typically in psychoanalytic therapy?
Traditional psychoanalysis is in-depth and is conducted in five sessions every week. Today, modern psychoanalytic therapy is less intense and normally incorporates as few as one or two sessions a week. In some cases, positive change can occur quickly. However, if the condition, difficulty, or behavior is deep-seated, improvement may require many months or years of therapy.
Is psychoanalytic therapy suitable for young people?
Children and adolescents can benefit from this type of therapy. Many kids and teens are often unable to form and communicate their thoughts and emotions. Psychoanalytic therapy uses specific techniques such as dream analysis, symbolism, and free association or word association; all of which can be useful tools for less-communicative young people. Through this therapy, a patient will hopefully make connections between what they feel inside and how the world works outside.
Can psychoanalytic therapy be done online?
Modern-day psychoanalytic therapy is very different from traditional psychoanalysis. While an individual can sit face-to-face with the psychoanalyst for multiple sessions a week, they do not have to. Today, psychoanalytic therapy can be effectively conducted online or by phone. The key is that the individual confronts what is repressed and avoided, and this can be done whether in person or over online video.
