In addition to my practice, I’m also a Teaching Associate at Harvard Medical School and a member of the Boston Psychoanalytic Society & Institute.
I believe therapy offers the opportunity to become who you really are. People are often unaware of all of the factors that are keeping them stuck, creating dissatisfaction, or causing distressing symptoms. By developing a deeper understanding of yourself and your relationships through therapy, it becomes possible to experience your life more authentically, feel better in your relationships, and move toward what is enriching or important to you. I provide a reliable and empathic setting where we can carefully understand the difficulties you are experiencing – leading to relief, personal growth and lasting change.

Over the years I have taught at the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute and the San Diego Psychoanalytic Center, and have served as Director of Psychotherapy at the Austen Riggs Center.
My first priority throughout my many years of practice of psychotherapy and psychoanalysis has been to create the environment of trust and safety that any therapeutic relationship must have to be successful. I believe that the changes psychotherapy can bring about occur through an increased capacity for self-understanding and the ability to make sense of one's own experience. I am pragmatic and believe that a variety of psychodynamic approaches may be used depending on the problem at hand.

I am certified in psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and in psychoanalysis by the American Psychoanalytic Association.
Over 35 years of practice, I have understood that first and foremost, a therapy relationship must provide trust and safety. In such a setting, close and active listening helps to illuminate a person’s inner world and establish a dialog that deepens self-understanding and acceptance. An expanded narrative of the self and discovery of new modes of thinking leads toward more positive feeling and action. I am pragmatic: People want help with pressing problems in living and we go with what works – choosing from a range of psychodynamic approaches those best tailored to a person’s specific needs.

I subsequently did analytic training at the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute (BPSI).
People often come to treatment seeking relief and support. Many are curious about patterns in their lives, and want to develop a deeper, more useful understanding of how and why things are unfolding as they are. Some have ideas about changes they want to make; others feel stymied in their pursuit of a vibrant, creative life. Good therapy provides the opportunity to engage with these and other deeply personal concerns in an environment of warmth and trust.

Psychotherapy is a safe place where we can explore how the past continues to affect the present. It is an encounter with another person which can be painful at times but also lively and genial. As a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst trained at Tufts Medical Center and the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute I employ an approach that integrates psychoanalytic, cognitive, and mindfulness-based techniques with psychopharmacologic management. The human experience is complex and I engage my patients in a flexible manner that respects the gravity of our work.

I practice creatively within psychodynamic and psychoanalytic frameworks, and I am familiar with DBT and CBT.
It's not necessarily easy to start (or restart) therapy. I am committed to honoring and transforming suffering through a compassionate, trauma-sensitive, eclectic approach. I welcome your complexity and curiosity as well as your suffering. We can discover together what can help you heal. I trained in psychiatry at UMass, and in child and adolescent psychiatry at Cambridge Health Alliance. My undergraduate and graduate education at Harvard, in visual art and architecture respectively, has provided a foundation for my comfort in exploring the unexpected and unknown. I bring this openness, creativity, and wonder to my therapeutic work.

People are often unaware of, and frustrated by, the emotional and relational roadblocks that repeatedly thwart them. I work with you to clarify and understand these issues and their origins, to help you effect positive change. I believe that the self-understanding that catalyzes such change is best reached by cultivating a psychotherapeutic relationship in which compassionate, honest and constructive communication can occur. I strive to create an environment that encourages the development of empathic and reflective self-awareness, recognizes and fosters resilience, and promotes your optimal well-being.

Does psychoanalytic therapy work?
Psychoanalytic therapy derives from the work of Sigmund Freud. In this type of therapy, discovering buried thoughts and emotions from the unconscious will help a person work through their difficulties and negative behaviors. Research shows that psychoanalytic therapy can be highly effective, with patients reporting improvement in mood, quality of life, and overall well-being.
How long are people typically in psychoanalytic therapy?
Traditional psychoanalysis is in-depth and is conducted in five sessions every week. Today, modern psychoanalytic therapy is less intense and normally incorporates as few as one or two sessions a week. In some cases, positive change can occur quickly. However, if the condition, difficulty, or behavior is deep-seated, improvement may require many months or years of therapy.
Is psychoanalytic therapy suitable for young people?
Children and adolescents can benefit from this type of therapy. Many kids and teens are often unable to form and communicate their thoughts and emotions. Psychoanalytic therapy uses specific techniques such as dream analysis, symbolism, and free association or word association; all of which can be useful tools for less-communicative young people. Through this therapy, a patient will hopefully make connections between what they feel inside and how the world works outside.
Can psychoanalytic therapy be done online?
Modern-day psychoanalytic therapy is very different from traditional psychoanalysis. While an individual can sit face-to-face with the psychoanalyst for multiple sessions a week, they do not have to. Today, psychoanalytic therapy can be effectively conducted online or by phone. The key is that the individual confronts what is repressed and avoided, and this can be done whether in person or over online video.
