I am particularly good at managing Bipolar Disorder (which I believe is an underrepresented condition in medicine), as well as Depression, Anxiety, and Substance Use Disorders.
I am Board Certified in Family Medicine and hold additional credentials in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Yoga, and Meditation. My background gives me a unique advantage at balancing the treatment of physical as well as psychiatric conditions. Sessions with me are longer than with the average Psychiatrist or Family Physician and I believe a strong partnership between doctor and patient is the key to success. I have become an expert at medication management as well as various types of talk therapy. If you're feeling lost, you've come to the right place.

I specialize in treating anxiety and mood disorders as well as substance use disorders.
Mental suffering is often neither simple nor obvious to others. My primary aim is to help alleviate that suffering, and I recognize how important a personalized and collaborative approach is in this work. Psychiatric medication and psychotherapy are powerful tools that can promote well-being and I enjoy working in both modalities to provide a tailored treatment plan as well as foster greater understanding and growth. After completing my training at Yale I have worked in multiple treatment settings, which has broadened my perspective and helped me be attuned to each patient on an individual level.

My ideal client would have a substance use disorder and/or a mood disorder, such as depression or anxiety. These clients would need medication management and therapy to alleviate their symptoms and improve their quality of life. Their goal would be to recover and live a life free from the grasp of substances and mental health issues. They would want to better their lives by furthering their education, getting a job, taking care of legal matters, and being there for their families and friends. Ultimately, these clients would want to be happier and healthier.

I offer comprehensive treatment, taking into consideration not only whether a patient has a medical illness, but also discussing lifestyle, substance use , relationships and other factors that could be affecting an individual's mental health.
I am currently scheduling patients for both in-person (PA/NJ) and telehealth (PA/NJ/MA) appointments. I welcome patients who are looking for medication management, therapy, a second opinion, or any combination of the above. My interests include diagnostic clarification of mood/anxiety/attention disorders, evaluation of young adults who may be seeking help for the first time, and treatment of substance use disorders that often present with other common diagnoses.

I frequently integrate these issues along with nutrition, exercise and lifestyle to support mental health. I take a holistic approach to psychiatric care. I first seek to understand a client's goals and meet them where they are. Treatment plans often vary significantly between clients. I feel it is important we utilize whatever strengths a client has and develop plans that integrate one's values, spiritual beliefs, physical limitations, and culturally relevant beliefs. I feel compassion and empathy are some of the most important qualities in this field and I am grateful to have gotten the chance to work with so many wonderful people.

My philosophy of care as a psych nurse practitioners direct me toward diagnose and treating mental illness through psychotherapy, psychopharmacology, case management, and clinical supervision. I as a provider function independently to meet patient care needs within my scope of practice. Psychiatric Nursing to me is all about the relationship you establish with your patients, understanding them from their perspective and asking them what they think is going on with their health or what has been changing in their body and mind.

Substance Use Psychiatrists

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.

About Psychiatrists, meds and Psychiatric Nurses.

A Psychiatrist in Philadelphia is a qualified medical doctor who specializes in treating mental health issues and diagnosable disorders.

Philadelphia Psychiatrists differ from other mental health professionals in that they may prescribe medication as well as practice psychotherapy in treatment. Sometimes, Psychiatrists form part of a clinical team in which they will diagnose and prescribe, while psychologists or therapists provide the client's psychotherapy.

As part of a clinical assessment, Psychiatrists may conduct physical examinations, take blood tests, and order and interpret lab tests and brain image scans, such as CT scans, CAT Scans, and MRIs.

The field of psychiatry in Philadelphia has many sub-specialties, including pediatric psychiatry. Those who work with the elderly are called geriatric psychiatrists.

Other related sub-specialties include cognition psychiatry, addiction psychiatry, psychosomatic, forensic, reproductive medicine specialties, psychopharmacology , psychiatric genetics, neuroimaging, and clinical neurophysiology.

Psychiatric nurse practitioners in Philadelphia, or mental health nurse practitioners, generally have an MS degree in nursing (MSN) and a number of years of training to become certified. Psychiatric nurse practitioners are able to assess and diagnose mental health conditions and prescribe medication. Philadelphia Psychiatric nurse practitioners also have training that enables them to include psychotherapy with treatment.
