I specialize in the mental wellness of children (Ages 5-17) and their families (parents/caregivers) who may benefit from mental health services via their own individualized treatment or additional support in areas such as coping, stress management, and parenting support. I view the family as a system-events such as divorce, death, incarceration, illness, etc., affect each member of the family in a unique way. Often, the focus of treatment is on the children due to acting out behaviors, or a decline in grades. But what about the caregivers? Parents often neglect their own mental health. My solution is comprehensive family care.

I am a board certified child , adolescent and adult psychiatrist who works hard to practice psychotherapy and psychopharmacology in both a private & supportive setting. While I strongly believe in pharmacologic interventions backed by empirical evidence, I am a firm believer in the value of therapy & more holistic interventions (exercise, diet, meditation, mindfulness). I understand the importance of shoring up wellness rather than treating illness, and you can expect to spend a significant amount of time discussing the importance of sleep, fitness and nutrition, in addition to tackling deeper psychological issues.

I am Board Certified in Adult and Child /Adolescent Psychiatry, and have extensive experience with providing psychiatric support to patients with significant medical illness.
I am a strong believer that "fit" is essential in a therapeutic relationship, so the ideal client would not have any specific diagnosis. I suggest to patients is that we meet 3-4 times before determining whether each of us feels we can move forward successfully. Rather than being fully invested in one school or type of therapy I appreciate creatively incorporating different approaches. My ideal patient is open to shifting perspectives and flexible to modifying treatment as more information and data is discovered. I want to have an open interactive dialogue and view treatment as a collaborative effort.

As a child , adolescent, and adult psychiatrist, I am uniquely qualified in using a biopsychosocial formulation to observe and evaluate the factors that may be affecting someone while also being aware of any medical problems that could be present and not yet diagnosed.
The focus of my work is healing, not only mental, but also spiritual and emotional, so that one can reach their full potential. I work with clients of all ages. Having trained at CHOP and Tufts University, I incorporate evidence-based medicine and the latest research in the fields of psychotherapy and psychopharmacology when I practice. I work with almost all psychiatric disorders, with particular expertise in ADHD, anxiety, and depression. I am taking new patients at this time and either myself or someone in my practice is usually available to see a new client within four weeks.

As a psychotherapist, I help people recover and grow, guided by each individual's psyche. I draw on the broad and deep resources of depth psychologies, the body-based, scientific wisdom of medicine and psychiatry, and the many artforms that humans instinctively have created for millennia. My practice includes adults, couples, children , adolescents and college students-people who come because they suffer from anxiety, depression, trauma, loss, relationship problems, medical illness, parenting challenges, crises in mid-life, and creative and professional blocks. Many come with curiosity about new directions that their lives could take.

Child Psychiatrists

Do I need to attend therapy with my child?

Parents are an integral part of a child’s therapy, but the specifics of their involvement vary. If your child is young, you may attend most or all sessions; if your child is older, you may attend a few sessions or none; sometimes a therapist may ask you to have a session on your own. Whatever the arrangement, you should expect to work collaboratively with the therapist, your child, and your family members to take steps to help support your child.

How long are sessions with child therapists?

Children’s therapy sessions can last 30 minutes, 45 minutes, or 60 minutes. The length of the session may depend on your child’s age and the type of therapy practiced. You can discuss this with therapists you consult and the one you ultimately move forward with.

How do I get a child to agree to seek therapy?

The best approach is to have an open-ended conversation with your child about how they’re doing and what they might be struggling with. When you raise therapy, discuss the concept in an age-appropriate way, for example explaining that a therapist’s job is to help kids handle their hard or uncomfortable feelings. Frame therapy positively, as an opportunity to explore and build emotional skills—it’s an important tool in the toolbox to help kids feel their best.

How can I tell if a therapist is a good fit for my child?

A child needs to feel comfortable opening up about their thoughts and feelings, so if your child feels a sense of comfort, ease, and trust with their therapist, that’s a great sign. In addition, a therapist is a good fit for your child if the two can communicate well together; a clinician should be able to communicate clearly, effectively, and in an age-appropriate manner.

About Psychiatrists, meds and Psychiatric Nurses.

A Psychiatrist in Philadelphia is a qualified medical doctor who specializes in treating mental health issues and diagnosable disorders.

Philadelphia Psychiatrists differ from other mental health professionals in that they may prescribe medication as well as practice psychotherapy in treatment. Sometimes, Psychiatrists form part of a clinical team in which they will diagnose and prescribe, while psychologists or therapists provide the client's psychotherapy.

As part of a clinical assessment, Psychiatrists may conduct physical examinations, take blood tests, and order and interpret lab tests and brain image scans, such as CT scans, CAT Scans, and MRIs.

The field of psychiatry in Philadelphia has many sub-specialties, including pediatric psychiatry. Those who work with the elderly are called geriatric psychiatrists.

Other related sub-specialties include cognition psychiatry, addiction psychiatry, psychosomatic, forensic, reproductive medicine specialties, psychopharmacology , psychiatric genetics, neuroimaging, and clinical neurophysiology.

Psychiatric nurse practitioners in Philadelphia, or mental health nurse practitioners, generally have an MS degree in nursing (MSN) and a number of years of training to become certified. Psychiatric nurse practitioners are able to assess and diagnose mental health conditions and prescribe medication. Philadelphia Psychiatric nurse practitioners also have training that enables them to include psychotherapy with treatment.
