With over 25 years of combined experience in behavioral health and psychiatric nursing, I've dedicated my career to helping adults and adolescents find relief, stability, and a clearer path forward. My practice centers on the evaluation and medication management of depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, ADD/ADHD, OCD, mood disorders, psychosis, and more. But beyond diagnoses and treatment plans, what drives me is the relationship I build with each patient. I believe the provider–patient connection is foundational to real, lasting progress — and I take the time to understand your full story before we ever talk about next steps.

People often decide to see a psychiatrist because they are experiencing psychological or interpersonal pain. Because of this pain, they are unable to feel a sense of well-being or feel connected to themselves or others. Often, emotional pain results from unknown or unrecognized beliefs, conflicts, and patterns. When people are unaware of their feelings, thoughts, and actions, they may stay stuck in maladaptive ways of thinking and relating. Psychotherapy aims to help people develop a deeper awareness of themselves in order to relieve symptoms, enhance well-being, and develop a healthier relationship with the self and others.

My ideal client is someone who arrives at our first session feeling tired of themselves—tired of the loop they've been stuck in, tired of explaining their struggles to providers who only seem to hear the DSM code, not the human story behind it. They've likely seen other clinicians before, collected a few diagnoses along the way, and maybe even tried medications that helped around the edges but never quite reached the center of the pain. They come to me not with demands, but with a quiet, almost fragile hope: Maybe this time someone will actually listen. Maybe this time we'll figure out what's really going on.

FAQ - Marriage Counseling Psychiatrists
Do psychiatrists provide marriage counseling?
Yes, some psychiatrists provide marriage counseling, though this is not the primary focus for most psychiatrists. Psychiatrists are medical doctors who specialize in mental health and can offer psychotherapy, including couples therapy, in addition to prescribing medication. However, traditional marriage counseling is more commonly provided by licensed marriage and family therapists (LMFTs), psychologists, or clinical social workers.
What is the difference between a marriage counselor and psychiatrist?
The main difference is medical training and prescribing ability. Psychiatrists have completed medical school and psychiatric residency training, which means that they can diagnose mental health conditions and prescribe medication, in addition to providing psychotherapy. In contrast, marriage counselors typically hold master's degrees in counseling, social work, or marriage and family therapy and specialize in relationship dynamics and communication skills; they cannot prescribe medication.
Should I see a psychiatrist individually or go to marriage therapy?
This depends on whether your primary concern is individual mental health symptoms or relationship challenges. Individual psychiatry is appropriate when you are seeking treatment for your *own* mental health condition (such as depression, anxiety, or ADHD) and need medication management or psychiatric evaluation focused specifically on your symptoms and treatment plan. Marriage therapy with a psychiatrist is appropriate when relationship problems are the main concern and one or both partners have mental health conditions that impact the relationship. Many people may benefit from both individual psychiatric care for personal mental health management *and* separate couples therapy (with either a psychiatrist or marriage counselor) to address relationship dynamics. For example, one partner experiencing postpartum depression might work with a psychiatrist for evaluation and medication while both partners attend couples therapy to navigate new parenting challenges.
