Do you feel worried, stressed, or depressed by a particular issue or in general? Have you noticed a pattern of experiences in life that you'd like help with? Does it affect your work or relationships? Have you had other treatments that have left you feeling that some underlying issue has not been fully addressed? Empathic and kind listening & exploration, alongside personal experience & growth may be necessary. My patients tend to be intelligent & sensitive, but come in struggling or unhappy in their lives. They have become aware of feeling stuck in the same issues presenting over and over again.

How do we sort out problems of living? How do we formulate who we are and who we want to become? How do we develop loving satisfying relationships? How much are these questions of the mind and to what extent are they about the biology of our brains? As a psychiatrist, these are the questions that have shaped my clinical practice for over 25 years.

People often decide to see a psychiatrist because they are experiencing psychological or interpersonal pain. Because of this pain, they are unable to feel a sense of well-being or feel connected to themselves or others. Often, emotional pain results from unknown or unrecognized beliefs, conflicts, and patterns. When people are unaware of their feelings, thoughts, and actions, they may stay stuck in maladaptive ways of thinking and relating. Psychotherapy aims to help people develop a deeper awareness of themselves in order to relieve symptoms, enhance well-being, and develop a healthier relationship with the self and others.

Unlike other providers who talk at you instead of with you, I do things differently. Mental healthcare should feel personal, not transactional. I bring authenticity and connection into every session so you’ll never feel like “just another patient.” While I provide skilled medication management to ease symptoms and restore balance, I also know medicine alone isn’t enough. I take time to understand your story and walk alongside you in creating lasting change. Together, we’ll look beyond the prescription to what really matters to you, building something meaningful, not just a treatment plan.

Often the tribulations and traumas of life can expose our personal vulnerabilities, causing us to feel overwhelmed, unhappy in our relationships, and dissatisfied with our lives. Yet human beings are innately resilient and with the right support and guidance, we can not only diminish our suffering but cultivate greater understanding, deeper relationships, and wisdom. My aim is to use my advanced training in existential philosophy, positive psychology, and psychoanalysis to work collaboratively and compassionately with clients to help them feel better, develop greater insight, and develop greater sense of meaning in life.

I view individuals as a “whole” with the understanding that our biology, social context, spirituality and community make us who we are. I frequently integrate these issues along with nutrition, exercise and lifestyle to support mental health. Underlying all my work with individuals and families is a foundation of open communication and a therapeutic relationship.

I am currently accepting patients for consultation and medication management. I do not accept insurance. I am a board-certified psychiatrist specializing in the treatment of individuals struggling to make sense of themselves, and their place in their life and in the world. I have worked for many years with individuals with psychosis, which has taught me to respect our innately human ability to construct narratives of our experiences, and the power of narrative to define our sense of purpose. I work with individuals who want to create lasting change in their lives and bring meaning back to their life story.

Does psychoanalytic therapy work?
Psychoanalytic therapy derives from the work of Sigmund Freud. In this type of therapy, discovering buried thoughts and emotions from the unconscious will help a person work through their difficulties and negative behaviors. Research shows that psychoanalytic therapy can be highly effective, with patients reporting improvement in mood, quality of life, and overall well-being.

How long are people typically in psychoanalytic therapy?
Traditional psychoanalysis is in-depth and is conducted in five sessions every week. Today, modern psychoanalytic therapy is less intense and normally incorporates as few as one or two sessions a week. In some cases, positive change can occur quickly. However, if the condition, difficulty, or behavior is deep-seated, improvement may require many months or years of therapy.

Is psychoanalytic therapy suitable for young people?
Children and adolescents can benefit from this type of therapy. Many kids and teens are often unable to form and communicate their thoughts and emotions. Psychoanalytic therapy uses specific techniques such as dream analysis, symbolism, and free association or word association; all of which can be useful tools for less-communicative young people. Through this therapy, a patient will hopefully make connections between what they feel inside and how the world works outside.

Can psychoanalytic therapy be done online?
Modern-day psychoanalytic therapy is very different from traditional psychoanalysis. While an individual can sit face-to-face with the psychoanalyst for multiple sessions a week, they do not have to. Today, psychoanalytic therapy can be effectively conducted online or by phone. The key is that the individual confronts what is repressed and avoided, and this can be done whether in person or over online video.
