I am trained in the use of psychotropic medications to treat a variety of psychiatric disorders, including mood disorders (Depression and Bipolar Disorder), Anxiety Disorders ( Panic Attacks, OCD, GAD, and PTSD), Psychotic Disorders, as well as ADHD, Autism Spectrum, and sexual problems.
My treatment philosophy starts with the fact that I believe that every human being is unique, and deserves to be happy and to be treated with dignity. I have been working for my entire adult life in the medical field. I worked for many years as a critical care nurse, treating men and women suffering from severe, life-threatning illnesses. As I saw individuals and families struggling with pain and illness, I became gradually more interested in focusing on people's inner, mental well-being. I was fortunate to be able to train as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. I am availabe to treat any patients in the State of Ohio.

Currently Accepting New Patients. I help those who struggle with anxiety , depression, trauma, substance abuse, or illness that keeps them from fulfilling their full potential. My approach is to optimize wellness by combining integrative and holistic principles with the traditional practice of psychiatry. As an osteopathic physician, my foundation is based on principles of treating the whole person, incorporating mind, body, and spirit; acknowledging that the body is capable of self-regulation and self-healing; and realizing that structure and function are reciprocally related.

Good psychiatric care happens during visits as well as between visits. And yet when it comes to psychiatry, 15-minute med checks once every few months is the norm. It's no wonder why so many patients are overwhelmed, frustrated, and skeptical about psychiatric care! (Don't even get me started If you have multiple conditions like ADHD and anxiety !) What if instead you worked with a psychiatrist who is open-minded, experienced, and will take the take the time to get to know you (or your child)?

Anxiety Psychiatrists

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.

About Psychiatrists, meds and Psychiatric Nurses.

A Psychiatrist in Independence is a qualified medical doctor who specializes in treating mental health issues and diagnosable disorders.

Independence Psychiatrists differ from other mental health professionals in that they may prescribe medication as well as practice psychotherapy in treatment. Sometimes, Psychiatrists form part of a clinical team in which they will diagnose and prescribe, while psychologists or therapists provide the client's psychotherapy.

As part of a clinical assessment, Psychiatrists may conduct physical examinations, take blood tests, and order and interpret lab tests and brain image scans, such as CT scans, CAT Scans, and MRIs.

The field of psychiatry in Independence has many sub-specialties, including pediatric psychiatry. Those who work with the elderly are called geriatric psychiatrists.

Other related sub-specialties include cognition psychiatry, addiction psychiatry, psychosomatic, forensic, reproductive medicine specialties, psychopharmacology , psychiatric genetics, neuroimaging, and clinical neurophysiology.

Psychiatric nurse practitioners in Independence, or mental health nurse practitioners, generally have an MS degree in nursing (MSN) and a number of years of training to become certified.
