I prefer to take a holistic approach to treatment with a focus on depressive disorders, anxiety/stress disorders, and trauma related disorders.
Conversations surrounding mental health and well-being so often minimize the depth of a person's struggle and prevent them from ever asking for help. Your mental well-being should not be considered taboo, but rather a priority. Challenging life experiences happen to everyone, but we often have little information and guidance on how to navigate things like burnout, trauma , relationship turmoil... Whether this is your first time seeking treatment or if you are returning or continuing treatment, we can work together to help achieve your goals, better manage stressors, and improve the quality of your every day life.

I specialize in ADHD, anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, trauma , OCD, personality disorders, and addictive disorders.
People deserve to feel heard and understood from those they are seeking support. Grounded in my training at Columbia, I believe in treating clients as collaborators who have agency in their treatment. I strive to provide the latest psychopharmacological and psychotherapeutic approaches that would be best suited to their situation. I am primarily focused on treating people who question the role that drugs and alcohol may play in their life - whether they are considering abstinence or moderating their use, I am particularly attuned in helping people understand themselves.

Additionally, I am trained in Trauma Focused-Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, a model that can be used for children who have suffered medical trauma , have chronic illness, or who have experienced other forms of trauma (abuse, neglect, exposure to violence).
My interests in working in psychiatry started very early. I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at a young age. Living with a chronic condition has taught me about the intimate connection between mind and body and the power of one to influence the other. I am a board certified Child, Adolescent, and Adult Psychiatrist. In every stage of my training, I sought to deepen my understanding of this connection, and develop skills to help patients maintain a balance between the two. I specialize in treating children with chronic medical conditions; particularly type 1 diabetes, but also many other conditions.

Attention, impulse control, and trauma -related issues are often misunderstood, stigmatized, and poorly treated. With time and treatment, patients who are affected learn to recognize and compensate for their symptoms. Self-acceptance brings appreciation for their own energy, strengths, and resilience. Many continue to exciting lives of high achievement and satisfaction. It is my privilege to accompany you on this journey.

I have published papers on addiction, trauma , and psychoanalytic treatments.
I have been in practice over 30 years and have treated a wide range of life problems for individuals and couples. I believe that patterns are developed while growing up in our families of origin that no longer work or produce symptoms. I focus on understanding those attachment patterns historically and in the present in order to reflect and change them. I tend to be very empathic and interactive in this exploration with a focus on symptom reduction and change.

I am an attending psychiatrist at Columbia with a private practice locations located on the Upper West Side, and enjoy treating adults, adolescents, and children with a wide range of psychiatric problems including, but not limited to; trauma , anxiety, substance abuse, psychosis, ADHD, and personality disorders.
A great psychiatrist needs to combine clinical and scientific expertise with empathy and curiosity about people and their troubles. Throughout my career, I have been fascinated with how each of us develop our unique personal style of coping with a life that will inevitably bring problems in love, work, and the death of our loved ones and ultimately ourselves. If you or your loved one suffers from problems with mood, anxiety, attention, or seems stuck in a pattern of maladaptive behavior, I will work with you to identify the cause and find a solution.

During my training, I specialized in women's mental health and early childhood trauma .
I am an adult, child, and adolescent psychiatrist working primarily through individual psychotherapy. I see most of my patients on at least a weekly basis. Although I do sometimes prescribe medication, the management of medication is not my primary focus. I believe in psychotherapy because it is more effective than medication for most concerns, and because it can be a powerful, relationship-based experience that works to close past wounds. As a therapist, I try to always be open and compassionate as I listen and intervene.

I rely on additional expertise in trauma and dissociation, the neurobiology of personality, childhood development, psychoanalytic technique, and in evidence-based psychotherapies such as mentalization-based therapy, cognitive processing therapy for trauma , and transference-focused psychotherapy.
I am a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, affiliated with Icahn School of Medicine and New York Psychoanalytic Institute. I treat people who feel stuck, either because of paralyzing anxiety, depression, or some other inexplicable emotional symptom. Others feel stuck in a particular way of relating to others, a specific view of themselves, compelling or distressing fantasies, or due to past traumatic experiences. I aim to provide individualized treatment to target a variety of difficulties in managing emotions, identity, and interpersonal functioning. When necessary, I also prescribe medication to optimize treatment.

Trauma and PTSD Psychiatrists

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.

About Psychiatrists, meds and Psychiatric Nurses.

A Psychiatrist in New York is a qualified medical doctor who specializes in treating mental health issues and diagnosable disorders.

New York Psychiatrists differ from other mental health professionals in that they may prescribe medication as well as practice psychotherapy in treatment. Sometimes, Psychiatrists form part of a clinical team in which they will diagnose and prescribe, while psychologists or therapists provide the client's psychotherapy.

As part of a clinical assessment, Psychiatrists may conduct physical examinations, take blood tests, and order and interpret lab tests and brain image scans, such as CT scans, CAT Scans, and MRIs.

The field of psychiatry in New York has many sub-specialties, including pediatric psychiatry. Those who work with the elderly are called geriatric psychiatrists.

Other related sub-specialties include cognition psychiatry, addiction psychiatry, psychosomatic, forensic, reproductive medicine specialties, psychopharmacology , psychiatric genetics, neuroimaging, and clinical neurophysiology.

Psychiatric nurse practitioners in New York, or mental health nurse practitioners, generally have an MS degree in nursing (MSN) and a number of years of training to become certified. Psychiatric nurse practitioners are able to assess and diagnose mental health conditions and prescribe medication. New York Psychiatric nurse practitioners also have training that enables them to include psychotherapy with treatment.
