My training in addiction and sex therapy enhances my ability to treat an array of mental health issues including but not limited to depression, bipolar disorder, psychotic disorders, OCD, anxiety, PTSD, ADHD, and personality disorders.
Mental health and its treatment are stigmatized, rendering the initiation of treatment intimidating for many. That is why I provide a professional and empathetic space for consultation and treatment; everyone should be comfortable seeking the care they feel they need. I also utilize telepsychiatry when appropriate to increase access to care. I am dual board certified in adult general psychiatry and addiction. I have also specialized in clinical training in sex therapy and I am affiliated with NYU's Program in Human Sexuality . I offer both treatment for patients and supervision for other mental health professionals.

I'm a sex and relationship therapist in Manhattan, where for the past 30 years I've helped over 1,500 men, women, and couples feel better about lovemaking and relationships. I'm also Associate Clinical Professor at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York, a frequent guest on national media, and the author of the new book "Love Worth Making: How to Have Ridiculously Great Sex in a Long-Lasting Relationship" (St Martin's Press, 2018). Unlike most sex therapists, I'm also an M.D. --- which can be important since sexuality is on the border between the mind and the body.

In addition to general psychiatric care, I offer specialized care in reproductive psychiatry, trauma, and sex therapy .
I am a psychiatrist located in the Upper West Side of Manhattan, trained in psychotherapy and psychopharmacology. As a psychiatrist, I have the pleasure of working with a variety of patients and can easily tailor treatment to each patient’s specific needs. For some patients, therapy is enough. For most, the combination of therapy, medication, and lifestyle interventions results in remission of symptoms. In my practice, I strive to create an intimate, safe space for self-exploration and personal growth. I am supportive, nonjudgmental, and empathetic. We will focus on what you want out of treatment and help you achieve your goals.

I have 2 different, but overlapping, focuses in my practice. I am a holistic/nutritional psychiatrist, using a functional medicine approach to health and wellness, thereby trying to reduce or eliminate the need for medications. I also have a 15yr+ specialty in sex therapy with couples/individuals treating all sexual dysfunctions in all areas of desire, arousal, orgasm, pain, or sexual issues that interfere with a couple's happiness. I give couples & individuals a holistic understanding of their sexual difficulties - incorporating physical, psychological, emotional, and relational - to enhance sexual pleasure while maintaining balance in one's physical and emotional health.

I have special interests in Social anxiety, Depression, OCD, gender and sexuality issues, and the relationship between leadership, resilience and burnout.
I am a board-certified psychiatrist who completed training at the NYU School of Medicine. I understand that the decision to ask for help can be a scary one for many reasons. Your mental health can be impacted by your current stressors, prior stressful life experiences, and your cultural background. The first step towards achieving wellness is asking for help. My approach to mental health and wellbeing recognizes these experiences and provides a professional, safe and confidential place to address your concerns and get the care that you need.

I am also a psychoanalyst and faculty member of the Columbia Center for Psychonanalytic Training and Research as well as a sex therapist at the NYU Program in Human Sexuality .
I am Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Columbia University and a board-certified psychiatrist committed to offering comprehensive care for individuals, couples and families. I practice and value psychotherapy because it can be an enormously powerful tool to enhance personal growth, learning and self-discovery. Being a physician enables me to offer the option of medication when needed. This has the advantage of integrating both types of treatments with one provider only. If you are already in psychotherapy, I will work in coordination with your therapist to achieve the best result.

Many of my clients are high performers who have become successful despite a difficult childhood. If you are curious how therapy can help you reduce your suffering, improve your relationships, and help you heal from past traumas, I encourage you to reach out for a free consultation. I use elements of EMDR therapy in my approach. I am kink allied and sex positive. I invite you to come as you are. I will respect, support, and encourage you during our time in therapy.

Are you at the top of your industry? Do a lot of people rely on you to be mentally and physically well? Executives, performers, professional athletes, and medical professionals tend to neglect their own mental health. This is a convenient mental health solution that combines talk therapy and psychopharmacology as needed. Perhaps you are dealing with drug or alcohol dependence, porn addiction, or chronic anxiety. Perhaps you have a history of sexual abuse and neglect. I have heard it all and you can speak freely without fear of judgment or shame.

You’ve achieved conventional success. Despite being financially stable with a family or successful career, you feel overwhelmed. Stress is constant. You feel out of control. So many things seem wrong (when they should be right). It’s so hard to communicate how you feel. Little disappointments trigger big stress. No matter how hard you try, it’s never enough. You feel like a hostage to your own life. Is this burnout?

Sex Therapy Psychiatrists

Who is sex therapy for?

Sex problems are common in relationships. Many people want a better sex life and want to feel loved and desired by their partner. It is difficult for couples to resolve sexual problems on their own because people often feel ashamed to talk about their sexual desires fearing they are not normal, when in fact a very broad range of preferences and behaviors are normal. A sex therapist can help clarify this and other matters.

Why do people need sex therapy?

Many people do not know how to talk about their erotic needs or their emotional needs, both of which are addressed in sex therapy. Couples often live with sexual difficulties for years before seeking help, and in that time, partners may experience so much disappointment and alienation that they may fear their problems mean they are incompatible. Once people experience disappointment, it is difficult to find resolution without help.

What happens in sex therapy?

People have many misconceptions about what takes place in sex therapy. First, it is a form of talk therapy in which partners discuss their sexual concerns; it does not involve touching or physical exploration of any kind. Sex therapy typically helps couples get comfortable talking to each other about sex so that, in the privacy of their home life, they can openly discuss their sexual desires and make decisions about what they want to do. Couples are typically assigned activities to do at home that build intimacy skills.

What kinds of problems do sex therapists treat?

Very often, partners differ in their degree of sexual desire and struggle over how often to have sex. Or they may have fights about porn use or have difficulty connecting sexually after one partner is unfaithful. Men may have problems with premature ejaculation. Women may find themselves struggling to become aroused or to achieve an orgasm. Sometimes partners feel like they have lost the sense of attraction to their partner. These are all common issues dealt with in sex therapy.

About Psychiatrists, meds and Psychiatric Nurses.

A Psychiatrist in New York is a qualified medical doctor who specializes in treating mental health issues and diagnosable disorders.

New York Psychiatrists differ from other mental health professionals in that they may prescribe medication as well as practice psychotherapy in treatment. Sometimes, Psychiatrists form part of a clinical team in which they will diagnose and prescribe, while psychologists or therapists provide the client's psychotherapy.

As part of a clinical assessment, Psychiatrists may conduct physical examinations, take blood tests, and order and interpret lab tests and brain image scans, such as CT scans, CAT Scans, and MRIs.

The field of psychiatry in New York has many sub-specialties, including pediatric psychiatry. Those who work with the elderly are called geriatric psychiatrists.

Other related sub-specialties include cognition psychiatry, addiction psychiatry, psychosomatic, forensic, reproductive medicine specialties, psychopharmacology , psychiatric genetics, neuroimaging, and clinical neurophysiology.

Psychiatric nurse practitioners in New York, or mental health nurse practitioners, generally have an MS degree in nursing (MSN) and a number of years of training to become certified. Psychiatric nurse practitioners are able to assess and diagnose mental health conditions and prescribe medication. New York Psychiatric nurse practitioners also have training that enables them to include psychotherapy with treatment.
