I specialize in the treatment of children, teenagers and young adults with anxiety, mood disorders, OCD, ADHD, school avoidance, phobias and panic disorder.
I am a board-certified child, adolescent and adult psychiatrist in private practice in Asheville, NC and on faculty at the Yale Child Study Center in New Haven, CT. I provide therapy as well as medication management, when necessary. The primary modalities I use with clients are Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Psychodynamic Psychotherapy. One of my biggest passions is providing excellent resources to supplement therapy, so clients feel well-versed in their treatment and realize they are not the only ones going through these struggles. Mental health issues are common and treatable and there should be no shame in getting help!

Perhaps excessive worry, obsessive fixations, past trauma or deep sadness prevent her from making friends, going to school or enjoying life.
Together, we can sort out what your child is going through & come up with ways to make their life easier & more in line with development. We carry out a responsive plan that may include careful medication use, oversight & adjustment, combined with emotional, social & educational supports. I can collaborate with her therapist, if she has one.

I enjoy seeing patients across the lifespan, primarily focusing on adults with depression, anxiety, OCD, ADHD, opioid and alcohol use disorders, bipolar spectrum, and eating disorders.
I spent the first portion of my career in emergency medicine. I met a lot of incredible people and learned many valuable lessons. However, over the last several years, I have had significant experience with mental illness in that setting and have become very passionate about the importance of mental health care. Seeing people transition past their struggles into a life that is full is inspiring because it is not an easy path. My goal is to help each patient reach this path and stay accountable and aware.

I primarily treat depression, Bipolar Disorder, anxiety, insomnia, ADHD, OCD, and PTSD.
I am an experienced local psychiatrist working with clients anywhere in North Carolina in a small, client-centered telehealth practice. I am seeking to connect with clients who are searching for a higher quality of care than we generally receive in the traditional "medical model". This may a working professional looking for a flexible, high-quality approach to treatment or a long-term patient tired of the limitations of the 10-minute med check. Unique features of this practice: individualized treatment; night/weekend appointments; in-home appointments; and a modern EMR software for convenient communication and telehealth.

With experience in managing bipolar disorder, anxiety, depression, PTSD, and OCD, we will explore the best path forward—through therapy, medication, or a combination—so you can feel empowered and regain balance in your life.
Life can be overwhelming, especially during times of transition. Whether you're navigating the emotional highs and lows of life, during pregnancy, adjusting to life as a new parent, or facing challenges in other stages of life, you don’t have to do it alone. Many individuals struggle with stress, anxiety, or feelings of disconnection, particularly new mothers who may feel they aren’t bonding with their babies as they expected. If you find yourself feeling lost, exhausted, or unsure of where to turn, know that hope and support are available.

Hi! My name is Kathryn, but I go by Kat. I am a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP). My career began in emergency medicine, where I saw firsthand the challenges patients face when struggling with mental health & substance use. I have been practicing psychiatry and psychotherapy for the past 6 years in WNC. My promise to you is to remain dedicated to your health and helping you achieve lasting change as we work together. I feel strongly that an individualized approach is key in the management of all clients. While many people may present with similar symptoms, the causes and context of these can vary greatly from person to person. The decision to prescribe medications, develop a therapy plan, or an amalgamation of both is made with careful consideration of the situation and your needs and wishes. I enjoy working together to find a plan that works for you.

Obsessive-Compulsive (OCD) Psychiatrists

How long does OCD treatment take?

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is often treated on a weekly or twice-weekly schedule, depending on symptom severity and the client’s preferences. Some clients may start to see a noticeable improvement in symptoms in as little as six weeks, but it’s also possible, especially in more severe cases, for treatment to take several months to a year before significant progress is made.

What happens if OCD is not treated?

Some people with OCD, especially those with mild symptoms, may find that they are able to adapt reasonably well to life with the condition, even if their symptoms never resolve completely. However, many people, particularly those whose symptoms are severe at the outset, find that their obsessions and compulsions grow more intrusive with time, making it harder to maintain relationships, hold down a job, or navigate the world successfully.

Are there medications for OCD?

Medication can be used to treat OCD. The class of drugs most often prescribed are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, which include fluvoxamine (under the brand name Luvox), fluoxetine (Prozac), and sertraline (Zoloft), among others. In cases of treatment-resistant OCD, other classes of medication, such as tricyclic antidepressants or atypical antipsychotics, may be prescribed. Medication is frequently used in conjunction with therapy.

Can OCD come back after treatment?

Yes. Major life transitions, periods of stress, or other factors can cause symptoms to return or, if they were never fully eradicated, to ramp back up in intensity. For some, these relapses are brief and do not require additional treatment; identifying specific triggers and practicing the skills learned in therapy can help speed their course. For others, returning to therapy for a brief period can help address the underlying stress and strengthen coping mechanisms.
