Henry Blanchette
Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner, PMHNP
Scarborough, ME 04074
I treat a wide range of conditions including depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, adjustment disorder, psychosis, addiction and more.
I am accepting new patients for medication management. The most common feedback I get from patients is gratitude for “really listening.” I think that properly understanding your experience is fundamental to providing effective care. Based on an accurate diagnosis that incorporates the broader scope of your life experiences (biological, psychological, social, cultural, and spiritual context), I utilize a variety of tools to help you reach your goals. While I incorporate psychotherapy and many other non-pharmacological interventions, medication management is often my primary role.

You may be struggling with symptoms that feel difficult to manage — anxiety, depression, mood shifts, or conditions that haven't responded well to previous treatment. My ideal clients are individuals who are ready to take an active role in their mental health and want a provider who sees the full picture. I take time to understand every aspect of what you're experiencing — your history, your lifestyle, your goals — so we can build a medication plan that truly fits your needs, not just a diagnosis. Therapy is part of that conversation too.

As a family psychiatric nurse practitioner, I am able to assess, diagnose and provide medication management. Currently, I am only taking middle school children through adulthood. When prescribing medication, to best serve the individual it is important to differentiate between what medical, psychiatric or areas that need other modalities. I provide counseling for the adult clients who I see for med management, should they want it. By working collaboratively with clients with their medication management, clients feel heard and more involved with their care.

Many individuals come in questioning whether ADHD may be contributing to their difficulties, often alongside obsessive–compulsive disorder, anxiety, or depression. As a provider with a particular focus on OCD and related conditions, I often help untangle overlapping symptoms that have led to years of confusion, self-doubt, or feeling misunderstood. I provide comprehensive psychiatric evaluation and medication management in a collaborative, nonjudgmental setting, with appointments available without long wait times. My goal is to offer clarity, thoughtful treatment, and a deeper understanding of each person’s unique patterns.

Treatment is collaborative and structured, integrating trauma-informed and skills-based approaches when appropriate.
Many adults who manage significant demands find that anxiety becomes persistent or difficult to manage, contributing to self-doubt and chronic stress. These challenges may show up as difficulty with concentration, energy, and sleep. Many function well externally while feeling unsettled internally, increasing risk for burnout and relationship strain. My approach emphasizes comprehensive evaluation, thoughtful medication management, and insight-oriented care to promote meaningful and lasting change.

I have always been in awe of the human experience as we move through our lives. The more I have practiced in mental health, the more humble I have become to all our journeys. I have come to realize at times we all need a partner to walk our path together. “your mind is like an unsafe neighborhood; don't go there alone.” ― Augusten Burroughs. Our thoughts can create wonderful, imaginative stories that we become attached to. Having another to hear your story, explore what is needed and what might need to be released, can help us find comfort in this journey.

FAQ - Trauma and PTSD Psychiatrists
How can psychiatrists help with trauma and PTSD?
Trauma and conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are characterized by distressing symptoms like flashbacks, insomnia, intrusive memories, hopelessness, and irritability in the wake of a major event. Trauma can also result from a chronic series of events, resulting in a condition known as complex trauma. Not all individuals who experience a traumatic event seek psychiatric support or gain a diagnosis for a trauma-related disorder; indeed, many individuals with strong social supports and/or coping skills, which can contribute to resilience, can manage complex feelings after a traumatic event on their own. However, many individuals do benefit from seeing a psychiatrist for medication or other therapeutic support, particularly if they are experiencing acute symptoms or are particularly vulnerable to trauma due to other emotional conditions or challenges.

How do psychiatrists treat trauma and PTSD?
Psychiatrists can help individuals struggling with trauma by prescribing medication that helps to reduce the intensity of symptoms. Medications are often most effective, however, when used in conjunction with evidence-based therapy interventions, such as Exposure Therapy or Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT). These forms of treatment help individuals overcome trauma-related symptoms through guided exposure to trauma-related triggers in a controlled therapeutic environment. In some cases, psychiatrists will conduct these sessions with clients, or they may work with a client's therapist or counselor who offers these services. This team-based approach to care for trauma can be particularly useful, as can ongoing maintenance sessions with a psychiatrist even following an initial period of more intensive treatment, since many individuals with trauma or PTSD may experience relapses or the return of symptoms even after initial progress. In such cases, having a psychiatrist who can adjust the treatment plan or medication in accordance with a client's needs can be an important part of maintaining long-term recovery.

How can I find a psychiatrist who specializes in trauma and PTSD?
The Psychology Today online directory can be a helpful resource to search for psychiatrists (MDs) and psychiatric nurse practitioners (PMHNPs) who specialize in trauma, PTSD, and related conditions. In addition to searching for psychiatrists who specialize in these conditions, you may consider searching by psychiatrists who specialize in working with a particular population, such as veterans or children. When searching for a provider, ask about their specific experience treating symptoms of trauma and what their approach to therapy and medication is. It is also important to determine whether their office is accessible (either close-by or via telehealth) and if they accept your insurance.
