Therapy, I believe, is a collaborative exploration of important aspects of one's present and past, in order to develop alternative coping mechanisms and strategies for growth, to relieve suffering, to foster healthy relationships, and to attain one's personal goals. I have had much success in helping patients along a path to better mental health and functioning.

I'm a psychoanalyst who works with adults, children, couples and families, and have a subspecialty in sexual difficulties.
Psychoanalytic therapies work in depth to help people with their difficulties and life crises, even if the actual work has a short term focus on a life crisis. I help people to look at the underlying vulnerabilities that make a current crisis or life situation more difficult than it otherwise has to be.

I work with both individuals and families, with an approach that is thoughtful, collaborative, and grounded in understanding the whole person within the context of their relationships and development.
Treatment with me isn't one-size-fits-all. I offer both therapy and medication management, including CBT, attachment-based therapy, psychodynamic work, and PCIT whatever the moment calls for. Parents are active partners in the work, not bystanders. The goal: kids who understand themselves, parents who feel equipped, and families who can breathe again.

I treat individuals —and couples and families—at all ages and stages of life: athletes, students, Professionals including physicians and attorneys, those pondering retirement or already at that stage.
Dr. Baum has a general adolescent and adult psychotherapy and medication management practice. I treat the “whole” patient, and have visits of sufficient length to know my patients thoroughly. I also focus attention on any ongoing medical problems. I encourage and incorporate exercise into treatment. I aspire to create an atmosphere that feels natural; if a patient prefers, we might have a walking session. When not practicing remotely, I have a therapy dog in my office. We can schedule a consultation to ascertain what your needs are, to establish a treatment plan, and to see whether I am a good fit for your ongoing treatment.

FAQ - Family Therapy Psychiatrists
Do psychiatrists provide family therapy?
Some psychiatrists do provide family therapy as part of their practice, but it is less common than individual treatment. While all psychiatrists are trained in psychotherapy during their training, most focus their practice on individual medication management and one-on-one therapy. Family therapy is typically the specialty of licensed marriage and family therapists (LMFTs), licensed clinical social workers (LCSWs), and psychologists who have more dedicated training in family systems and group dynamics.

What is the difference between a psychiatrist and a family therapist?
A psychiatrist is a medical doctor (MD or DO) who can prescribe medication and provide medical evaluations for mental health conditions, while a family therapist focuses exclusively on therapeutic interventions without the ability to prescribe medication. Family therapists (often licensed as LMFTs or LCSWs) complete master's level training specifically in family systems theory, which examines how family members interact and influence each other's behavior and emotional well-being. Psychiatrists receive medical training that focuses more on the biological, rather than relational, aspects of mental illness.

Do I need an individual psychiatrist or a family psychiatrist?
What kind of mental health clinician is needed depends on the nature of the problem you are facing. Individual psychiatry is better when you have specific psychiatric symptoms (like panic attacks, mood swings, or psychotic symptoms) that require professional diagnosis and potentially medication. Family therapy provided by a psychiatrist, in contrast, may be a good fit when problems manifest in family relationships, such as parent-child conflicts, communication challenges, or adjusting to major family transitions like divorce or grief. In some cases, it may be appropriate to see both an individual and a family psychiatrist if there are individual and relationship-related concerns in a family simultaneously. For example, a teenager with depression might see a psychiatrist for medication and symptom monitoring while the entire family attends therapy together to improve communication and support the teen's recovery.
