I have expertise in the specialty of women's mental health including perinatal mood and anxiety disorders.
My treatment approach begins with discussion of stressful issues from your perspective. If medication is identified as an intervention I can fully discuss potential benefit as well as risk. Treatment is customized on a person-by-person basis. I believe the best treatment or medication is the one that works for you. I often recommend nutrition, exercise, yoga, and other activities promoting rest and adequate sleep. I support Involvement of family and other treatment providers.

I specialize in mood disorders and in psychiatric treatment for pregnant and postpartum women.
Patients reach out to me for a variety of reasons, but most of it boils down to wanting to feel like themselves, or perhaps wanting to feel like a version of themselves they hope for in the future. People with depression, anxiety, racing or intrusive thoughts, trauma, insomnia, mood swings, problems with appetite, and problems with concentration come to me for help. They are interested in finding the right psychiatric medication, supplements, and lifestyle to provide symptom relief and to be able to engage with the world around them in positive ways.

I specialize in working with women and men who are struggling with depression, anxiety, or other pregnancy, prenatal, or postpartum changes, to stop feeling unfulfilled in life or motherhood, and begin to feel more present and connected to family and those around them.
Let’s be honest, they don’t talk about how hard motherhood or ‘adulting’ really is. You love your family, but nobody said it would be this hard! You braced yourself for the sleepless nights, dirty diapers, and tantrums, but the emotional impact of being a mother has caught you off guard. You didn’t anticipate feeling a perpetual sense of unease due to persistent worries, overwhelming sadness from a perceived loss of your former self, and guilt or hopelessness for not living up to the mother (or person) you think you should be. No matter where you may currently be physically or emotionally, you are here seeking treatment!

I have a special interest in teens, eating disorders, postpartum depression, substance abuse, anxiety, and mood disorders.
My name is Natalie Hollobaugh and I have been a nurse for over 19 years. I started at the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center on the adolescent floor before becoming a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner. At Johns Hopkins, I primarily cared for teenagers with medical/surgical and psychiatric issues. It was here I saw the immense need for psychiatric providers.

Pregnancy, Prenatal, Postpartum Psychiatrists

What are the most effective ways to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns?

The most effective way to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns is by finding a therapist who has prior experience helping other patients overcome the challenge being faced. For example, a marriage and family therapist may have experience helping couples adjust to their new relationship dynamic. An anxiety specialist may have experience helping with phobias or illness anxiety related to the child’s health. A depression specialist may have experience treating postpartum depression.

When should I seek treatment for prenatal or postpartum concerns?

Pregnancy and the postpartum period involve intense physical and mental changes; a degree of upset and instability is normal. However, if these changes impair daily functioning, it may be time to seek help. This distinction is pertinent for postpartum depression: A period of teariness, irritability, and distress is difficult but normal in the one to two weeks after childbirth (sometimes called the “baby blues.”) But if feelings of sadness and hopelessness persist beyond that period, the person should seek treatment.

How do I manage worries during pregnancy or the postnatal period?

A therapist can help patients develop the tools they need to manage anxieties during or after pregnancy. Cognitive behavioral therapy can help people identify and reframe harmful patterns of thought, and change their behaviors. Other techniques and skills can allow people to develop acceptance, psychological flexibility, self-compassion, communication skills, and more.

Are there specific medications for postpartum depression?

In 2019, the FDA approved the first medication designed to treat postpartum depression. The medication is called brexanolone and is delivered intravenously by a medical professional over the course of a few days. However, typical antidepressants, which are more accessible, can also treat postpartum depression. The disorder is often best treated through a combination of medication and therapy.
