My patients are often wondering whether the emotional problems they are experiencing are due to a recognizable disorder and whether they may respond to appropriate medication. Often they have been treated unsuccessfully in the past. They expect and receive a clear explanation and discussion of the rationale for the treatments available, and the advantages and disadvantages of each. They expect this to happen in an empathic atmosphere with someone who spends the time to get to know them in the context of their unique interpersonal and occupational milieu and who takes this context seriously in discussions and decisions.

I purposely maintain a small practice so that I am able to spend time with my patients. Initial evaluations are usually one to two hours, follow-up visits 20 - 45 minutes. All patients are scheduled no closer than one hour apart so there is no one else in the waiting room (with very rare exceptions) and there is time to run over if necessary.
