As a Massachusetts General Hospital trained Child, Adolescent and Adult Psychiatrist with more than twenty years experience, I combine psychotherapy and medication as needed, to treat a broad range of psychiatric disorders.
How do we learn to understand and trust what our feelings are saying to us? What makes it possible to change entrenched ways of coping that are not working? My focus in therapy is to help patients deepen their personal relationships and find their work more rewarding; medication can sometimes help alleviate symptoms that interfere with achieving these goals. By providing a safe and supportive environment for the patient's search for self-understanding, and listening closely to what is being said and not said, I collaborate with the patient in finding creative and pragmatic ways to overcome obstacles to change.

Academic affiliation -- Cambridge Health Alliance/Harvard Medical School where I teach: psychotherapy, child and adolescent suicide.
My practice is now closed to new patients as I am retiring in April, 2022. I am a psychiatrist (Adult, Child and Adolescent ), in private practice in Lexington, MA. I specialize in individual psychotherapy for kids and adults, couples therapy, family therapy, and psychoanalysis. While I am happy to prescribe medications to my current patients, I would consider myself quite conservative in that area; and typically will prescribe medication only when I am also providing the necessary psychotherapy for the adult, or child, adolescent , and their family.

After several years working as a nurse in the medical field and understanding the mind-body connection, I discovered that I wanted to work in a way that I could create long term relationships with my patients. I believe that mental health is just as important as our physical health. Although I am a strong advocate for holistic modalities such as therapy, movement, nutrition, and sleep, psychopharmacology can be a critical part of your treatment journey. Medications work best when used in conjunction with therapy and overall well-being practices.

I am Harvard-trained and board-certified in both adult, and child and adolescent psychiatry.
Most people at some point in their lives find themselves feeling stuck, unable to break out of old patterns or achieve their goals. Many of the individuals I work with are outwardly functioning well in many areas of their lives, but struggling with depression, anxiety, or navigating life transitions. Talk therapy can be a powerful tool to help people move past these roadblocks and build a more meaningful and full life.

I work with individuals who have anxiety, depression, mood disorders, insomnia, relationship problems, trauma history, medical illness, neurological illness, and/or individuals who are helping family members with these problems. My experience over the last 25 years in psychiatry has shown that medications are helpful but do not take care of all problems in life. I offer combined psychiatric treatment. I received my psychiatric residency training from Georgetown University Hospital and fellowship in Psychosomatic Medicine from Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School.

Teen Psychiatrists

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.

About Psychiatrists, meds and Psychiatric Nurses.

A Psychiatrist in Concord is a qualified medical doctor who specializes in treating mental health issues and diagnosable disorders.

Concord Psychiatrists differ from other mental health professionals in that they may prescribe medication as well as practice psychotherapy in treatment. Sometimes, Psychiatrists form part of a clinical team in which they will diagnose and prescribe, while psychologists or therapists provide the client's psychotherapy.

As part of a clinical assessment, Psychiatrists may conduct physical examinations, take blood tests, and order and interpret lab tests and brain image scans, such as CT scans, CAT Scans, and MRIs.

The field of psychiatry in Concord has many sub-specialties, including pediatric psychiatry. Those who work with the elderly are called geriatric psychiatrists.

Other related sub-specialties include cognition psychiatry, addiction psychiatry, psychosomatic, forensic, reproductive medicine specialties, psychopharmacology , psychiatric genetics, neuroimaging, and clinical neurophysiology.

Psychiatric nurse practitioners in Concord, or mental health nurse practitioners, generally have an MS degree in nursing (MSN) and a number of years of training to become certified. Psychiatric nurse practitioners are able to assess and diagnose mental health conditions and prescribe medication. Concord Psychiatric nurse practitioners also have training that enables them to include psychotherapy with treatment.
