I draw from multiple traditions, including psychodynamic therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, internal family systems, psychedelic-assisted therapy, somatic experiencing, and eastern philosophy/ spirituality.
While we cannot control what has happened to us, we can understand how our lives have shaped who we are, building awareness of our conditioned patterns. In doing so, we can come to understand and accept who we are in the service of opening ourselves up to all life has to offer.

Evening and Sunday hours available! I provide a safe, supportive space where you can feel truly heard and understood. Many people struggle with stress, anxiety, depression, ADHD, PTSD, panic attacks, and sleep issues, often feeling like no one fully understands their experiences. I take the time to listen without judgment, offering care that is compassionate, patient-centered, and culturally sensitive. Fluent in English and Mandarin Chinese, I understand the unique challenges faced by Asians and people of color, including family expectations, societal pressures, and workplace stress.

You need help, but are unsure where to turn. Wary of doctors, suspicious of drugs to which you think you could get "addicted," unbelieving that anyone could know you well enough to help. You may already be taking medicine, but aren't convinced it is the best one for you, or even helping at all. As a clinical psychologist and family physician trained in psychopharmacology, I apply an unusual and broad background to help identify and clarify what is "stuck" for you right now. Discovering ways to feel free of anxiety, depression, anger or hate is our business together.

Congratulations for taking this step toward better mental health! I’m David, a transgender, neurodivergent, psychiatric NP with 13 years of experience. My well-rounded education supports my holistic and integrative approach and greatly improves diagnostic accuracy—the cornerstone of effective treatment. The adaptive teaching style that I developed as an educator empowers you to actively participate in your care. Nearly half of my typical caseload is complex cases; they are rewarding, not burdensome. Expert outpatient care helps to prevent hospitalization. In 2019 (pre-COVID), I made my services more accessible by taking them online.

I provide holistic patient care that integrates wellness, mindfulness, nutrition, and exercise with psychiatric management. I understand the challenges individuals face during life's pivotal moments – grappling with transitions, relationships, identity, trauma, culture, race, societal pressures, work demands, and family complexities. Recognizing the overwhelming nature of these struggles, individuals often find themselves lost and hesitant to seek support. I endeavor to establish a nurturing environment where you can openly share your burdens without fear, fostering a safe space for introspection and healing.

Spirituality Psychiatrists

What should I expect from therapy that incorporates a focus on spirituality?

Spirituality can mean different things to different individuals, depending on their experiences, beliefs, and life histories. Some individuals focus on strengthening their belief system, while others experience spirituality in secular ways, such as through meditation, yoga, or by spending time in nature. Clients can expect a therapist to help guide and grow their spirituality through any of these techniques, encouraging the individual to cope with the challenges they face and develop strategies to build resilience and purpose to improve their outlook in life.

What are the most common treatments that include spirituality?

There are several treatments that incorporate spirituality. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) helps a person examine and reframe their negative thoughts and behaviors. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) focuses on emotional acceptance and psychological flexibility. Existential therapy is most often used to address anxiety, depression, grief, loneliness, apathy, despair, questions of identity, and feelings of purposelessness and existential dread. Transpersonal therapy focuses on a client’s spirituality and meaning in life and may incorporate techniques including meditation, visualization, hypnotherapy, dream analysis, and or breathwork.

Can therapy incorporating spirituality help atheistic or agnostic individuals?

Yes. For non-believers, spirituality can offer benefits including a greater sense of connection to others and to the natural world. An interest in spirituality may also spur individuals to pursue mindfulness practices, or to contemplate their purpose in life and how to achieve it.

How effective is spirituality as a therapeutic remedy?

Research suggests spirituality is generally beneficial for individuals. It is correlated with better health habits, such as less substance use, and an improved capacity to cope with stress and other mental health challenges. Increased spirituality can lead individuals to become more empathic and less materialistic, as well.
