The state of mental health among youth in the United States demands attention. The most basic definition of childhood mental health is " healthy social development, the achievement of development and emotional milestones, and effective coping skills, so all children have a positive quality of life and can function well in school, at home, and in their communities”. Psychiatric nurse practitioners often serve as educators of children, adults, medical peers, and communities. PMHNP's conduct intake assessments, diagnose and treat mental illness, oversee & monitor psychotropic medications, make referrals, order diagnostic tests, evaluate physical symptoms & health, and collaborate with family & health care professionals.
The PMHNP role serves every facet of health care because health cannot exist without mental health. I serve the public by preventing, identifying & treating psychiatric conditions through holistic approaches, building trust & developing a therapeutic relationship.
